Chapter 3

작가: Perfect Timing
Early the next morning, Lauren got up and put on her makeup. Then, taking Cayden by the hand, she said, "Honey, I'm taking Cayden out for the day. Mason isn't feeling well, so stay home and keep an eye on him."

I tamped down my emotions and watched them leave without letting anything show on my face. As soon as they were gone, I got into a rental car and followed them.

I parked about 300 feet away.

The moment Cayden got out of the car, he ran into Gregory's arms with a huge smile and called him "Daddy". Lauren smiled as she walked over and linked her arm through Gregory's.

My eyes burned as I watched them from a distance, but my hands didn't tremble. Instead, I steadily recorded the entire scene.

The more they looked like a happy family of three, the more my hatred grew.

Three months earlier, Gregory had approached me about investing in his new venture. I was hesitant, but Lauren urged me to trust him.

"You two have known each other since childhood. If you can't trust Gregory, who can you trust?" she had argued.

Only then did I decide to invest my entire life savings. I also brought in 20 investors who trusted my judgment.

They believed in the strength of my reputation, giving Gregory the money he needed to get his company off the ground.

Yet, Gregory genuinely believed that he had accomplished everything on his own. He made sure everyone heard about his new company and even arranged an opening ceremony.

But once I announced that I was pulling my investment, the other investors would undoubtedly follow my lead.

I would love to see how Gregory planned to clean up the mess when that happened.

On the day of the opening ceremony, I arrived as the company's largest investor, only to be shown to a seat in the corner.

Gregory brushed it off casually, saying, "Henry, we've got several high-profile investors here today, and there isn't enough room in the front. You'll have to make do with this seat."

Before I could respond, Lauren spoke for me. "Henry has known you since childhood. He won't care where he sits."

Then, she turned to Gregory. "Your company is just getting started, so you need to mingle with the investors. I'll help you entertain them."

She eagerly walked away with him.

A commotion soon broke out near the entrance as 20 prominent investors from the industry arrived one after another.

Gregory immediately asked everyone to stand and welcome them, then rushed over to greet them himself. Lauren stood at his side as though she were the hostess.

From the entrance, Gregory loudly introduced each investor, prompting everyone in the room to rise and applaud enthusiastically.

The investor leading the group scanned the venue before spotting me in the corner. With a frown, he gave Gregory a meaningful pat on the shoulder.

"Keep up the good work."

Gregory's eyes lit up, and he nodded eagerly.

Once the investors entered, the other guests crowded around him.

"I can't believe you managed to bring in this many major investors. You've got some incredible connections, Gregory."

"Mr. Hayes, you're bound to become a major player in the industry. Don't forget about us when you make it big!"

Gregory made no effort to hide how pleased he was with himself. He practically looked down his nose at me.

I scoffed.

Did he honestly think those investors had come because of him?

Several guests who didn't know the truth turned toward me and began mocking me.

"You two grew up together, but Mr. Hayes already owns a company while you couldn't even get a seat in the front row. What happened, Henry?"

"You should come over and offer him a toast. After today, the two of you won't exactly be in the same league anymore."

Gregory looked down at me with a smile.

"Henry invested his entire life savings in my company. If he ever falls on hard times, I'll help however I can," he said.

The people around him immediately began flattering him.

"That pocket change of his was probably more trouble than it was worth. You're generous just for letting him invest, Mr. Hayes."

I studied Gregory's smug face before calmly setting my glass on the table.

"That won't be necessary because I'm withdrawing my investment."

At my words, Gregory's smile froze for a moment, but he quickly recovered.

I knew exactly what he was thinking. With so many other investors backing him, he assumed losing mine wouldn't matter.

Lauren, however, rushed over and grabbed my arm.

"Have you lost your mind?" she hissed.

I coldly shook her off and projected a video onto the screen. I looked at Lauren before turning toward the assembled guests.

"You think I've lost my mind, huh? In that case, let's show everyone why!"

As the video began to play, shock flashed across the guests' faces.

The investors' faces immediately turned grim as they looked at Gregory.

By the time Mason woke up the next morning, the house had already been emptied out.On the way to school, he looked up at me and asked, "Daddy, don't we have to wait for Cayden?"I gently ruffled his hair and smiled. "No. We won't have to wait for him anymore."I left the divorce entirely in my lawyer's hands. When everything was settled, Lauren walked away with 10% of our assets and custody of Cayden. All the properties that had previously been registered in Cayden's name were transferred back as well. I immediately had them placed under Mason's name instead. On the day we went to court to finalize the divorce, Lauren asked, "You don't even want to see me anymore, do you?"I regarded her calmly, but my thoughts suddenly drifted back to the day I had discovered Gregory's post.I remembered secretly taking Mason and Cayden in for paternity testing and how nervous Lauren had been the entire time. When the results finally came back, the last of my composure had shattered. I coul

After taking Mason out for dinner, I brought him home and found Lauren still there. She cautiously poked her head out of the kitchen when she heard us come in. "I warmed up some milk for you two. Have some before bed."Her voice was gentler than I had heard it in years. She even brought the milk over and carefully placed a glass in Mason's hands.Ever since we got married, Lauren had barely set foot in the kitchen, much less warmed up a glass of milk for Mason before bed.Mason held the glass in both hands and looked at me uncertainly. My brows immediately drew together. I took the glass from him and poured the milk down the sink."He's lactose intolerant! How do you not know that?" I snapped.Keeping my anger under control, I sent Mason back to his room to sleep. As soon as he was gone, Lauren came up behind me and wrapped her arms around my waist. Her voice trembled with emotion."Honey, it honestly slipped my mind. I'll learn from my mistakes. I promise I'll be the best mo

"I can't believe you had the nerve to cheat on me."Elliora Jones was dressed in a tailored suit, her lips pressed into a hard line."So, that's why you've been trying every excuse in the book to stay here. You kept telling me it was because you wanted to help take care of my parents, but really, you just wanted to stay close to your old flame, didn't you?"Gregory panicked. Clutching his cheek, he stammered, "H-Honey, when did you get back? This isn't what it looks like. I can explain!"I scoffed inwardly.Gregory and I had known each other for more than 20 years, and he had always thought he knew me well. Apparently, that was why he had felt comfortable sleeping with Lauren right under my nose. But that worked both ways. I knew him just as well as he knew me.It hadn't taken much effort to find his wife's email address through social media. Once I had it, I sent her Gregory's post along with the paternity test results."Everything you have, from the clothes you wear to the ho

"He's the one who came after me," Lauren insisted. "I don't know what came over me, and I made a mistake."Several people had already warned Gregory that he was about to be blacklisted from the industry. He sank into a chair, looking utterly defeated. Upon hearing Lauren's accusation, however, he pointed at her with a sneer."What did you just say? I came after you?"Lauren stared at him stubbornly, her eyes wide.Gregory gave a cold laugh. "What about all those times you called me in the middle of the night and told me to come downstairs to your apartment? You didn't seem to think I was seducing you then. "And when Henry went away on business, who invited me over and had me stay at your place for three straight days? Was that my idea, too?"Then, he turned to me with a mocking smile."You still don't know the whole story, do you? The truth is, she and I were already into each other on your wedding day. While you were passed out drunk, your bride was in the guest room with me

The words slipped out of Lauren before she could stop herself. The second she realized what she had said, she clamped a hand over her mouth. "Honey, why didn't you ever tell me you were capable of pulling something like this?"I stared at her in silence.Lauren had changed after we got married. She stopped caring about my job or anything else going on in my life. The only time she ever showed any interest was when she wanted me to send her money, and even then, all I got was a complaint."Why is your paycheck so low this month?"I had always assumed raising the kids was exhausting her. Instead of blaming her, I blamed myself for not earning enough to give her and the boys a more comfortable life.If I hadn't seen Gregory's post, I might still be completely in the dark, busting my ass to support another man's woman and raise his kid for him.The thought of what had happened to Gregory seemed to send Lauren into a panic. She dropped to her knees with a thud and wrapped her arms ar

  • You Mock Me, I Pull My Investment   Chapter 4

The video showed Lauren and Gregory acting intimately at the campground. The room erupted in an instant."They've been attached at the hip all day. I honestly thought they were married to each other.""They're not even trying to hide it. They're hooking up right under Henry's nose.""What kind of childhood friend sleeps with your wife and then tricks you into financing his company?"The investors' faces hardened. Without exchanging a word, they moved behind me and confronted Gregory."Trust comes first in any business partnership. We won't work with someone we can't trust. After what we've just seen, withdrawing our investments is the best decision for everyone involved."Once they pulled their funding, Gregory's company would collapse within days, and he would become a laughingstock.Panic immediately set in, and he tried to slander me."We've been friends for years. Whatever problems we have should be settled in private. You can't pull your investment over a personal dispute
