Chapter One -- The Fall
Sofia moved quietly around the house, humming to herself, and setting the dining-table. “Perfect.” She mumbled as she lit up a little candle in the middle. The smell of roasted chicken and fresh vegetables filled the air. “I pray this work.” Sofia said, hoping this would help her mate, Damien, out of his distant moods. Several attempts had failed as she tried to him to pass a moment with her, had rendered her sad yet she could not resist the temptation of a quiet intimate dinner to-night. Maybe to-night that would be different. Maybe tonight would end well, revive their mate bond and maybe… the dull and fading mate mark on her neck would be brought back to life. Her heart had shattered into a million pieces when she learned of the reason behind a fading mate mark. Her mate was falling out of love. “Help me moon goddess”. She prayed. Sofia checked the clock. It was nearly seven. She stared at the door, and wondered how he was going to come home and look at the preparations she made. She smoothed her dress by rubbing her hands on it. “Pray for me.” She mumbled to her bump. The opening of the front door took her out of her thoughts. She turned about and her heart went soaring upon the sight of her mate. Damien walker in , coat in his hand, his briefcase on the other, his face void of any emotion. No smile, no lingering look. He gave minimum attention to the dinner that she had prepared. “Welcome home. I went out shopping today so I made dinner, Damien" Sofia began, and walked towards him. “I made your favorites, come see.” He didn't look at her. His voice was calm, detached. “You went out despite doctor’s orders to stay at home and rest. Tell me, do you want to lose this one the way you lost the first four?” The words fell on her, cruel and harsh, but she smiles through it."Im sorry ... I was hoping we could--" "Eat together?" he cut her off result, and, after a time, glanced at her. "No, Sofia. It's better if focused on resting and not losing this baby.” Her chest tightened. She had spent hours cooking and fantasized over a time when she could have a chance of simple communication but it was clear that he was not interested. She bit lip, trying to hide her pain. She didn't argue. She didn't protest. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled but Damien was already making his way up the stairs. Reaching the staircase she paused, swallowing the lump in her throat, blinking repeatedly to prevent the tears from gathering. “Would you like to have a gender reveal... of this baby... Damien, in case everything will be well?” Her voice only trembled just over to the edge of a whisper. “Nothing extravagant, just you, I, and family…” Damien stopped in his tracks but did not look at her. His hand was lightly on the banister and he lightly answered, “Gender reveal? sure. If it survives." “Why… why do you say it like that? This is not an IT Damien! This is our child! This is your child! Why do you treat me like this? What wrong have I done to you? Tell me, is it something I am not aware of, tell me so I can apologize for it. I am sick and tired of you avoiding me like I am some sort of diease! Talk to me!” Sofia demanded as she climbed the stairs, to keep up with Damien who walked further, ignoring her. “Stop it, Aria.” Damien warned but he did not stop. “Stop what!” She yelled back. “Stop trying to bring this dead mate bond back to life. The only thing keeping up together is that baby… that if it survives.” He said coldly. The manner with which he spoke wounded her more than an outburst of anger. But she made a slight nod, and swallowed her disappointment. She took the second step when a sharp pang of pain shit through her abdomen. “Heaven.” She hissed. She had been having the same pangs of pains in her stomach and this was the indication that no more movement was safe any more. And when she lifted her weight to make another step her foot slipped. One second she was standing; then she had the world tipping on her side. She flailed her arms trying to hold something, but she only caught air. Her figure collapsed, and hit the wooden steps abhorrently. Her back and head hit the ground with a thud and pain radiated in her abdomen. there was a gasp on her part as she attempted to call, but her voice was choked in her throat. "Sofia!" Damien screamed. “My back, my head…it hurts.” Sofia tried to mumble, but the sound barely reached her own ears. She tried to make a gesture, to start herself up, but a sharp pain shot through her back and lower abdomen, forcing her to stay still and wince in pain. Colors blurred before her eyes and she heard Damien’s voice calling her name a second, a third time, even closer. Her body was hurting in places she didn’t even know existed. Tears rushed down her face, a bitter feeling rising up her throat. But she paid no attention to it, her mind on the excruciating pain, and the horror that lay in her heart. “Her baby.” Damien gently tapped her cheeks and touched her hand which was trembling as he tried to lift her. "Sofia! Stay with me. Please..." She scarcely could nod, as another pang of pain was shot through her. She could feel the warmth of his body, the beating of his heart against her ears. This was the first that he was not distant, not chilly. He was pathetic, his eyes were open, his face, which was normally placid and self-composed, was flushed with crude anxiety. She tried speak, to say that it was not only the fall, which frightened her but the fear of losing her fifth baby. The first four she had lost was hell. She spent days and nights crying her eyes out. Losing the fifth one, would send her to her grave. “Stay with me.” Damien’s panicked voice was now beginning to sound distant in her eyes. Two weeks had passed gracefully, nothing bad had happened everything was peacefully. Sophia had just reached thirty weeks of pregnancy. According to her doctor, every additional day the baby stayed safely inside gave him a stronger start and anyday can be the day she should always watch out for signs and how her body is reacting to things most especially she should pay close attention to the baby. Damien treated those words like law, he obeyed every single instructions and makes Sophia follows them too. If Sophia stood for too long he advised her to stand up and take a walk or light exercise. He was always beside her. If she yawned…he suggested a nap, if she reached for something on a high shelf, he had already taken it down, infact he assist her even in little things.“You have become impossible”. Sophia said one afternoon as he gently took a grocery bag from her hand.“ It was heavy”. He replied to her.“It had apples”. She said“Heavy apples I believed”. He defended. She laughed .
Three days after she came back from her thirty weeks appointment, Sophia had woken up before dawn the house was still very quiet even the birds had not begun singing,so she lay quietly and she was resting one hand on the curve of her stomach gently lately this had become her favorite part of the day just her and the baby no phones,no disturbance,no meeting,no noise,no wedding planner, no well meaning family members visiting without invitations only silence which she loved so much then she smiled at how peaceful everything was.“ Good morning little one”. She stroked her stomach gently, smiling.Almost on cues a tiny kick answered her“There you are”. She laughed softly.“I was beginning to think you were sleeping”. Another kick, this one stronger and lasted longer than the first kick.“So you're definitely your father's son,you always prove it”. Behind her Damien stirred half asleep, he opened his eyes slowly and saw Sophia he then murmured. “I heard that”. He said slowly, yawni
At thirty four weeks……. both the doctors and Sophia had been expecting their baby at least that was what the doctor wrote in Sophia report file when she visited for her antenatal routine. That means that only a few more weeks remain to finally meet their baby. Sophia was super excited and she was a little tensed too. She can't wait to hold her tiny, beautiful baby for the longest time she had waited and hoped. The realization filled her.“ The baby is growing perfectly his heart beat is strong and he is developing very well, your blood pressure looks good too”. The doctor said to her. The doctor was happy about how her health had improved too.Damien was happy to hear that, he was super excited and relieved at the same time. Hearing this good news sparked joy within him that he released a slow breath which he had held before the doctor gave them the good news, he does this every single time which Sophia had noticed him too during every appointment.“You always look worried whenever w
The baby shower became one of Sophia's favorite memories for days afterwards she found herself smiling whenever she thought about it. The decorations, the laughter, the endless gifts even Javier ridiculous campaign to convince everyone that the baby should be name after him especially that life seemed peaceful maybe a little too peaceful because ay thirty three weeks pregnant, Sophia woke one night to the sound of thunder, the storm outside was fierce, rain battered the window, lightening flashed across the dark sky. For several moments she simply listened then another sensation caught her attention.pain not sharp not over whelming just sent to make her sit upright immediately Sophia frowned her hand moved instinctively to her stomach, the baby shifted a strong kick, then another she took a slow breath everything seemed normal yet something felt different an easy beside her Damien slept peacefully for once she considered waking him the decided against it the man had become so protective la
Sophia had reached thirty two weeks of pregnancy and one thing had become very clear: everyone was obsessed with the baby, literally everyone…… her father, Damien, the staff ,law firm, even clients. Nobody asked how Sophia was anymore, instead every conversation started the same way.“ How is the baby?. Hope the baby is doing well". Nobody is really asking how she was doing. Sophia loved her baby, she truly did. But she was beginning to feel slightly uncomfortable hearing all that and guilty as well but she had to overlook which was why she became suspicious when Damien started acting strange again, very strange. For three consecutive days,he took phone calls in private. He avoids her sometimes,he shortens conversation whenever his phone rings and she begins to have doubt.Three days that was enough to make Sophia suspicious especially after everything they had been through.“You are hiding something”. She confronted him one day.Damien nearly spat his coffee.“What”?. He answered c
Sophia woke up to the aroma of fresh pastries. For a brief moment she was wondering what was happening now she remembered she was engaged again she smiled broadly. She rolled to the other side of the bed and found Damien already awake, he was sitting across the room working on his laptop.“Good morning”. He greeted her, when he saw her immediately. He smiled cheerfully at her.“You're smiling again”. Sophia teased him.“I am engaged”.“So am I”. “Exactly”. He replied, smiling more.“You have become unpredictable”. She replied to him and laughed too.“And yet you are marrying me”.“ Questionable life choices happen”.“You wound me”. He replied, he placed his hand dramatically over his heart. Before Sophia could reply, there was a knock on their bedroom door. A quick three knocks repeatedly. They both froze.“Oh no”. Sophia grumbles“What”?. Damien asked.“That's my father”. She replied, staring at the door.Damien immediately looked concerned.“Why is that concerning”?.Javier Reyes o
Then she believed he didn't know and that was her greatest weakness. That night everything was in control as usual.Nadia brought him tea. She is always smiling softly, looking innocent and was carefully watching him.”Drink”. She said,Damien took the cup, held it then without hesitation he dr
Damien refused to believe that his illness was just a minor one. He doubts if his illness was as a result of stress like the Doctor has said. These issues had been on his mind then he decided to take further steps by investigating. He sat behind his desk staring at a document in front of him but hi
