Chapter One ( Left Broken) Heartbreak

CHAPTER ONE I hear her before I open the door. That sound. I know that sound. I've heard it through walls at parties, through phone calls she didn't mean to pocket-dial, and now I'm hearing it through my best friend's bedroom door at 10pm on a Tuesday while my cramps are so bad I drove here because I needed help. I open the door. --- The lamp is on. They're in the bed. Ryan. Selena. My keys hit the floor. Nobody moves. Nobody speaks. Ryan's shoes are still on. That's the detail that does it. He didn't even take his shoes off. My ears ring. The room smells like her perfume and sweat and six years of me being a complete fool. "Rose." Ryan sits up. His voice is steady. Not even close to broken. "Listen to me." I look at Selena. She can't look at me. That's all I needed to see. I pull the ring off. It takes too long because my fingers are swollen and shaking and I hate every second of it. I throw it at the floor and it bounces once and disappears under the bed. Ryan stands.

Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO The contract is twelve pages. I know what a real contract looks like. I grew up watching my father sign them across boardroom tables. I know the tricks. The buried clauses. The language that sounds like nothing until a lawyer circles it in red six months later. Alfonso knows I know. He's standing by the window watching me read like he's got all the time in the world. He doesn't fool me. Page one is clean. Standard terms. Temporary marriage, minimum twelve months, public appearances required, full access to Tommaso resources for the duration. Page two. Three. # CHAPTER THREE Moretti has been talking for eleven minutes. I know because I've been counting. Watching him work the table the way men like him always do — loud, performative, filling the room so nobody else can breathe in it. He has soft hands. I noticed that when he shook mine. CHAPTER FOUR The glass hits the wall and explodes. Ryan doesn't even flinch at the sound he just made. He's pacing. Three steps left, three steps right, the way he does when the math stops working in his favor. Selena is sitting on my couch. My couch. In my apartment.
