Cleaning the guards toilet has to be the worst thing ever. Not only am I working with broken fingers, but the stench from the shit and piss mixed together is enough to poison me. It's now midnight and I'm completely famished as I clean the last toilet. This one is completely messy, filled with stains of shit and I can even see fly eggs on the rim of the toilet seat. I carry the now empty tray Isadora brought to me yesterday evening to the general kitchen. As I walk, the dread of seeing Kane again gnaws at me. His threat from yesterday lingers in my mind, and I fear I won’t be able to control myself if he touches me again. The thought of what I might do terrifies me.The kitchen is eerily quiet when I enter. The sink is piled high with unwashed plates and pots, and cockroaches scurry across them, some even climbing over the chunks of rotten turkey on the counter. The sole of my feet aches, pulsing with sharp pain as I try to massage them. But with my fingers still broken and wrapped tightly, the task is nearly impossible. A frustrated groan escapes my lips as I flop back onto the bed, wincing at the stiffness in my spine.It's night already. Hours have passed since I was dismissed from King Sven’s throne room after declaring my intention to enter the Dance of the Dead. My jaw slackens as I stare at the new set of sturdy leather boots and the gown Isadora places on my bed. It's early morning, and I had barely opened my eyes when she barged in, startling me awake. Now, I stand silently, watching her carefully arrange the items.“What are you doing?” I ask once she’s finished, eyeing the stuff on the bed suspiciously. Alongside the boots and gown are a fresh bottle of ointment, clean bandages, and a new set of nightwear.Isadora shrugs. “I’m doing what I was told to. King Sven had me bring these to your room, for reasons unknown to me,” she says, folding her arms behind her. “It makes me wonder what prompted this. The King I know isn't this generous. ‘Come and eat meat at Maggi’s Welcome back party! Host: Aunt Maggi.Venue: Maggi’s room.’That's exactly what the invitation letter Maggi had given me says. It even looks like she had it written herself. A sigh leaves my lips as I drop the letter on my chest. I probably won't be attending the party… not because I don't want to honour her invitation, but because I don't even have anything to wear besides my normal clothing which isn't appropriate for any kind of special occasion. The walk to Maggi quarters is longer than expected, winding through corridors I’ve never been allowed down before. Eventually we stop in front of a huge mahogany door, draped in bones. He rises to his feet, towering and regal, the rage emanating from him is palpable. “I told you we could talk about this once the girl leaves. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE START OF THE DANCE OF THE DEAD.“That’s what you'll be wearing for the party tonight,” Isadora says as she drops a flamboyant gold gown onto the bed. “From Lady Maggi.”I raise a brow as I stand from the floor, having just finished cleaning my staff. “A party? What party am I invited to?”“The one hosted for the participants of the Dance of the Dead tournament,” Isadora replies quietly. “It’s more of a feast, really.
