Not being in the office had been driving Lindsay crazy. The department had been updating her every shift, usually by at least one dispatcher on duty calling her or a deputy stopping by. Cat had been calling at 8 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m., almost on the dot, to ensure Lindsay knew everything that took place during the day shift. Little Bob had also stopped by the house daily to inform her of everything, just in case Cat had forgotten something. Big Bob and Andy had both stopped by once per shift at different times. That way, they were in other areas of the county and better able to respond to any calls that came in. Wren drove Dillon to school and then went shopping to stock up on the junk food he had promised Lindsay before she ever woke up. He found her favorite pizza, ice cream, chips, orange soda, and everything needed to make loaded nachos. Wren loved doing stuff like that for her and Dillon. He hoped that Lindsay would still be asleep by the time he got back to the house. When he got home, he carried everything inside and checked on Lindsay to see if she was awake. Lindsay took the tablet and began to scan the files from the camera memory card to find the correct ones. She found it and started to watch. Everything seemed to be perfectly normal for being on patrol at 3 a.m. in the middle of nowhere. She had just reached the time stamp 03:12 in the clip when she heard a screech of some kind and could see something near the top of the windshield of Max’s car. She watched carefully and could hear more shrieks and see more movement above the vehicle at the edge of the camera’s view. Then she saw it, but could not believe it. It looked like a flying monkey. Lindsay had gotten to the office early and had begun reviewing the reports Cat had left on her desk. Most of the reports were regular calls, but at least one per shift was odd. In the days she had been out of the office, there were three calls about ghosts or poltergeist activity, four unknown animal sightings, and four about strange lights. There had also been a call about an alien spacecraft complete with a crop circle, and as if that was not enough, a claim of a chupacabra eating someone’s chickens. Lindsay did not know how to react to that many bizarre calls. She had to commend all of the deputies who responded. They had done everything exactly the way they should have.She had just finished the last report when Max knocked on her open door. He usually looked perfect. His uniform was always immaculate. They got into their patrol cars and began to drive to the address they were given. Even though it was only a few minutes out of town, it was in a very isolated area. It was the only home in a half-mile radius. It was a simple farmhouse that sat off the gravel road. She had been behind Little Bob, so by the time she arrived at the department, he was already inside, pouring a cup of coffee. He was mumbling something to himself and shaking his head. She had seen him do this a few times before, but those had all been calls involving children who had not been adequately supervised. Lindsay and Cat continued working their way through stack after stack of files. They went back to about one month before Lindsay took over the department. The problem was that the first report of anything truly unusual was the event that happened at the Sycamore River that had injured Amber Clark. Now, the big question was, what could have happened to cause these things to start happening? Lindsay began trying to remember anything she had seen or heard that could explain why this was happening. Suddenly, she remembered a conversation she had with Wren. He had said that an incident had occurred on the base. In the past few days, the number of strange calls had continued to increase. Lindsay had been taking calls during the day, along with the deputies who were on duty. The calls she had taken included another poltergeist, a cattle mutilation, a strange humming noise that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere simultaneously, and, most recently, a gremlin. There had to be some way to end this chaos. All the strange calls were on top of the regular calls that generally come to the sheriff’s department. Lindsay had just walked into her office and sat down after the gremlin call when she saw Cat walking toward her door.“While you were out, Agent Gold called and asked that you please call him when you got back,” Cat said as she handed Lindsay the note. They put everything in the back of her car and began the drive out to the farm where the cow had been killed. Wren called the farm owner and let him know they were coming back out to have another look. Wren explained they needed to identify what had killed the cow. After that, they were mostly silent as Lindsay drove. All of the strange events were beginning to weigh on both of them. It only took a few minutes to reach the field where the cow was still lying. The first thing Lindsay noticed was that there were no other animals around.As they walked to where the cow lay, they realized how unusual things were. First, there was nothing but the cow. Typically, there would have been buzzards and crows nearby, but none were to be seen. There were not even any flies or beetles. Why was there nothing else here?
