“Is it true that you’re mentally unstable?” another nurse asked, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “Do you need professional help? Tell us why you would lash out at your own manager, the best friend who would do anything for you.” The room seemed to shrink around me. Like I was suffocating under the weight of all their eyes. I looked around at the faces staring back at me, at the phones pointed in my direction, at the strangers who believed they had the right to tear open every wound in my life and inspect it for entertainment. “None of you know anything about me!” I snapped, my voice ringing through the room. The words burst out before I could stop them. “Yet all of you sit here judging me!” I shouted. “You’ve judged me for a year, every single day and not one of you is tired of it!” 

"You were employed here for me as a nurse. I lost my baby over a month ago, I don't think I need your services anymore." The words were flat, devoid of the jagged grief that used to accompany them.  "Don't make me repeat myself," I said as I stood up and walked into the bathroom to help myself to a thorough bath. When I came out tying a towel, she was kneeling right in front of my bathroom pathway, her head bowed, her shoulders shaking with silent tremors. "Valerie, whatever I must have done to you, please forgive me." I paused, looking down at her.  Are they staging something for me to watch again?   I stepped into the pool of light by the door just as Cillian pulled his phone away from his ear. He didn't look surprised to see me, but his eyes narrowed as they raked over my form. "And where exactly are you going, Valerie?" he asked. His voice was calm, but beneath the surface, there was an edge of authority that made my skin crawl. "And do I owe you an explanation of wherever I choose to be? I don’t think I do anymore. Not after everything." He took a step toward me, his presence filling the hallway, but I didn't flinch. I stood my ground, my hands curled into tight fists at my sides. "If you want to stop me, you’d better come prepared," I hissed, my voice rising until I was yelling. "As you know, I have nothing left to lose! Do your worst, Cillian! Lock me up, break me, it doesn't matter.

 "What?"  "You heard me," I said, leaning back into the plush leather of my seat, relishing the way the material groaned beneath me. I felt a strange, intoxicating sense of control. "You asked me what I wanted. So, I’m telling you: defend me." "But I... I can't just—" "What? You don't want to?" I cut him off, my voice dropping into a sing-song lilt that was more menacing than a scream. "You know that I’m crazy, right? I think everyone in the nation has reached that consensus by now. And you know what happens when a madwoman starts screaming secrets from the rooftops. They might think I’m delusional at first, but curiosity is a powerful thing.
