I woke up smothered in a bundle of cotton sheets. I tossed, groping across the bed for Jack, but I was met with more pile of sheets. I wriggled myself from the bedding, and picked up his scrunched shirt from the large area rug. I brought it to my nose and inhaled his intoxication scent—fresh water, mint and a hint of oud. The smoky and woody notes made his scent exceptionally rare and rich. I wrapped my arms around the shirt, reminiscing our steamy lovemaking last night. I strode past Anne after confirming Jack’s availability and entered his office. He stood up, striding toward me, his arms unfolding and hands opening, ready to embrace me. I reached for him as he towered over me, tiptoeing as my arms opened in invitation.He took me in his arms and hoisted me off the ground, his head buried in my thick hair cascading down my back. “He just sat there?” Lana asked, incredulous.“He did, I shouldn’t have told him how I felt. “Good Morning.” I greeted Millicent as I entered the chemical lab. This was a first—seeing her face this early. Lana pulled the door wide open, revealing Jack in his full glory, but his despondent expression was stark. His eyes were glassy and focused, gazing down at me as though he was seeing me for the first time. He had his jaw clenched, his brows drawn together in a soft, pained crease. It was a usual Tuesday again but somehow, the silence in the chemical lab felt incredibly eerie. No Millicent in sight, and certainly no Nate to make my life a living hell. Thankfully.
