Adam was halfway through his review of Havenridge’s updated financial reports when Melissa suddenly pushed open the office door; her expression dark. He didn't need to ask to know something was wrong “There’s a problem.” Adam placed the document down on the slightly arranged desk, “what kind of problem?” “Riverside Heights.” Adam frowned slightly. Out of the six properties managed by Havenridge, Riverside Heights was one of the larger residential buildings. Chapter 22 – Melissa’s Loyalty Test (1)

Melissa's POV ... Melissa disliked corporate towers not because they were ugly. On the contrary, most of them were built specifically to impress people. Glass walls, polished floors, expensive lighting, receptionists with perfect posture and carefully trained smiles. Everything looked clean and formal as opposed to the place where her arrogant boss currently owned. But corporate towers also looked too artificial; which was exactly why she disliked them. The Lacoste building was no different. As she stepped out of the elevator, Melissa calmly adjusted the sleeve of her blouse while observing the hallway ahead. Not knowing or perhaps not caring about Melissa's thoughts, Jerome continued calmly. “Adam Wilson is rising too quickly.” Melissa didn’t respond. “He lacks proper background and has no powerful family support.” Jerome’s voice remained calm throughout. “But somehow he keeps advancing.” Melissa slowly placed the tea cup down. “And this concerns you.” “It has come to interest us.” Melissa looked toward the glass wall overlooking the city. From this height, the people below looked tiny. There were like ants that could be squashed or played with anyhow a person wanted. Conglomerates enjoyed views like this. “I decline.” Jerome looked at her quietly without a change in expression. If she was honest, Melissa disliked people like him. Not because they were rude but because they rarely revealed anything genuine. Even now, after rejecting an offer most people would dream about, Jerome’s expression barely shifted. “You should think carefully,” he said calmly. “I already did.” “The Lacoste family is not exactly known for their patience.” Melissa almost laughed slightly at that sentence. Chapter 25 – First Profit

The atmosphere inside Havenridge had changed noticeably within the last two weeks. It wasn't as dramatic as it was done in movies… The walls were still old, the furniture still looked slightly outdated and half the employees still carried the exhausted expressions of people who were tired of their jobs. What had changed was the existence of structure and order in the company. People arrived on time, reports were organized properly, maintenance requests no longer disappeared mysteriously before resurfacing three weeks later as emergencies. Even the reception area felt more alive compared to before. Victor disliked customers who clearly couldn’t afford the cars they came to look at. It wasn't just because he hated poor people even though he too was in the category. Rather, he hated that he had to waste his time for someone who only wanted to look at expensive things without the wealth to match it. After nearly eight years working at Hartwell Motors, he had developed an instinct for serious buyers. People with money carried themselves differently. Their eyes lingered on details instead of prices. They asked practical questions instead of fantasy ones. So when a young man entered the showroom that evening, Victor knew the person wasn't a serious buyer. Simple clothes and no expensive watch. The first person to see Adam’s new car was Jiang and his reaction was immediate. “What the hell is that?” Adam pressed the lock button casually and the black Mercedes flashed once beneath the morning sunlight. “A car.” Jiang slowly turned toward him. “No, senior brother. The restaurant Adam and Jiang went to was a high-class one located in the business district. Rather than overflowing with luxury like most expensive restaurants did, this one leaned heavily into a natural aesthetic look. Everywhere was wooden—from the chairs and tables to the walks and floors. Small plants sat neatly beside windows, and warm lighting hung from wooden beams overhead.
