Cassian POV The first thing I want is food. I head for the kitchen.I don’t even look at the refrigerator. If there was anything in there, it would have gone rancid a long time ago, and I really don’t even want to see it. I’m going to pretend that it’s empty. Lyra POV After our meal, I take his hand and lead him to the bedroom.Right from the start, the energy around us is completely different. The last time we had sex, down in the tunnel, it was charged with fear. Lyra POV “I still wish we could stay,” I say, looking fondly around the apartment that has been our shelter for the past few hours.“It’s dangerous to stay put anywhere,” Cassian says. He’s loading up his backpack with canned foods. We got really lucky here—we found two backpacks with straps like the ones on the backpack I lost. In addition to clothes and food, we’ve each rolled up a small blanket to take along with us. I thought about trying to cram in a pillow, too, but I really couldn’t justify it. Milo POV Annie’s baby is dead.I’ve known that for a while, and so has she. The fact that she has to go through this labor anyway, even though her baby isn’t going to make it—it’s one of the cruelest things I’ve ever seen in my life.So when the two strangers show up, looking around the corner of the building at us like we’re some kind of exhibit in an old museum, my blood is already up and I’m just about ready to tear their heads off for it. Fuck them. Who do they think they are? They don’t know what this woman has been through.I turn on them, shifting as I do. Lyra POV Cassian carries Annie. She gives in to that easily enough, curls up in his arms and rests her head on his shoulder. I guess she’s past the point of resisting anything that’s done to her. It’s hard for me to imagine allowing a man I’d just met to pick me up and carry me—I’m not sure I’d even let Cassian do it right now—but I can’t imagine what Annie must be feeling.At least she’s going to live. Milo seems pretty sure of that.I think about my own mother. About how excited she was when my new brother or sister began to grow inside her. About how the rest of the pack started treating her like royalty. And then, one day, it was all gone, and then she was gone, and I was an annoyance nobody really wanted.
