1. She's Rose

The deafening din of the music did nothing to disturb a beautiful girl dressed entirely in black. She walked like a Victoria’s Secret model with blonde wig and lips painted a deep maroon. Her elegant, confident stride carried her toward the bar which already crowded with patrons at one of Portland’s nightclubs. She ordered a cocktail with a bored expression, then sat waiting, oblivious to the many pairs of eyes watching her. “Got a new target?” a brunette bartender asked, as he handed the girl her drink. The girl merely gave a crooked smile, with no intention of answering. She casually sipped a bit of the drink. Her left fingers tapped the bar counter in a steady rhythm, as if counting something. Rose looked at her blood-stained hands. She wrinkled her nose in disgust, but then rolled her eyes in boredom. "Always such a hassle," she muttered irritably. "I told you I hate seeing blood. A 25-year-old young man was looking out at the row of high-rise buildings through the glass walls of his apartment on Northwest Park Avenue. "I knew you’d be captivated by her too." Leo’s voice drew Arsen’s attention to the girl. "Who is she?" Arsen asked curiously. "Her name is Rose. She’s every man’s fantasy. But none of those men have ever felt her body," Leo explained, his gaze fixed on Rose. The girl sat at the bar counter, sipping a glass of tequila. Many men tried to approach her, but they immediately backed off in an orderly fashion the moment they were met with a sharp glare from those beautiful eyes. “Stupid men! Don’t they get it? A week had passed since his encounter with Rose, yet Arsen still couldn’t forget her. Almost every night, he would visit his favorite bar or the places he’d once gone to with Rose, but he never managed to find her. Leo still hadn’t given him any news, and that made him anxious. It was as if she were a ghost who came and went as she pleased. He had once prayed silently, hoping to be reunited with Rose wherever she might be. But his prayer went unanswered.Perhaps he had committed many sins, so God was reluctant to grant his wish. Everyone who knew Arsen was shocked and puzzled by his disheveled and desperate appearance. Claire blinked, confused by the man’s words. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—I was just in a hurry to get to the café,” Claire said after snapping out of her bewilderment. She didn’t even know the man standing before her, so why was he acting as if he knew her so well? “Oh, my name isn’t Rose.” The man didn’t answer; instead, he simply walked away from Claire, who remained bewildered where she stood. After seven hours of working at a restaurant that was always packed with customers, Claire was finally able to go home. She had no choice but to walk to her apartment, since public transportation had stopped running at this hour.Josh couldn’t give her a ride home tonight, and hailing a taxi—which had passed by several times—wasn’t a good idea, given her dire financial situation. They chatted about many things, ranging from their college majors, hobbies, favorite movies, how Arsen had ended up in college late and eventually managed to open his own restaurant, to other trivial matters. Arsen felt that Claire was a pleasant person who could warm his heart. Her demeanor made him realize that not all girls were only concerned with wealth and trying to charm men. Claire acted normally toward him, treating him like a fun friend even though they had only met and gotten to know each other today.But still, Claire’s current change in attitude bothered him a little. It seemed impossible that the Claire from earlier that afternoon could be this relaxed and friendly while talking to him, considering how she had reacted earlier when faced with a long-haired stranger.
