We went home. Vivian held my hand and walked fast. Her palm wasn't soft like my mother's—harder, calloused—but warm.Back at the small, cluttered apartment, I found the man who smelled like rusted blades waiting for us. He sat on the couch with his feet up on the table, cigarette butts scattered all over the floor. The second he saw me, his face went dark."Why the hell did you bring him back?" He stood up, pointing at me, shouting at Vivian.Vivian pulled me behind her, blocking me from view. It was the first time she'd ever stood between us. She looked at him, her voice quiet but clear."This is my home. Get out."He froze for a second, like he couldn't believe what he'd heard. Then he laughed, an ugly laugh. "Your home? Vivian, you eat my food, live off my money, and now you're telling me this is your home?""I said get out."She said it again, louder this time. His laugh disappeared instantly. He lunged at her, grabbed a fistful of her hair, and shoved her to the ground."
