CHAPTER 10ARIA’S POV The plan was simple, which was why it was so dangerous. Simplicity left little room for error, and the margin for error tonight was nonexistent. We would wait for the moon to be at its zenith, shrouded by the thick cloud cover. Cera and I would slip out of camp, using a path only we knew, a narrow deer trail that ran along a treacherous, rocky ledge. David, Alex, and Jax would create a diversion an hour later, staging a noisy, false patrol to the west, drawing any watching eyes away from our true direction: back to the heart of the Ashborne ruins. “It’s a gamble.” David had stated, his arms crossed. He hadn’t liked the plan. He liked the journal even less. “Everything we do is a gamble!” I replied, checking the straps on my pack. Inside, alongside rations and a water skin, was the journal, wrapped in oilcloth. “This one just has a higher prize.”
