At first glance it sounds like one of those questionable setups, but the book is way more careful than the title suggests. The main character explicitly negotiates her own involvement—it's not a surprise. A lot of readers just want the fantasy of no-strings-attached, but I find myself more invested when the characters talk first. It adds a layer of realism that makes the spicy parts feel earned, not just handed to you. When someone suddenly stops a scene because the vibe is off, and the other character listens, that’s hotter to me than any domineering alpha ignoring a safe word.

The worst examples are where a character is clearly distressed and the other plows ahead anyway; that’s just uncomfortable. But a well-written enemies-to-lovers where they’re communicating through rivalry and spite? The consent is in the competition. They’re both engaged, both pushing back, and that mutual fire is the agreement.
Maybe I’m just a sucker for that charged silence where you know exactly what both people want without a word being said.
