OverDrive is the engine behind Libby (Libby is the consumer-friendly front-end). The classic OverDrive app still exists and does ebooks, audiobooks, and even videos. It's uglier and more complicated than Libby.

But! Some libraries have titles only available on the old OverDrive app, not yet migrated to Libby. If you can't find a title in Libby, check the legacy OverDrive app. It's the same library login. So technically, that's another Android app that supports both, but it's being phased out for most users.

A quirky limitation: some library apps won't let you borrow the ebook and audiobook of the same title simultaneously. Libby sometimes does, sometimes doesn't. Hoopla usually lets you, because its model is different.

So even if an app 'supports both,' your ability to have both formats of the same book at the same time can be restricted by licensing. It's not the app's fault, but it's a real-world hiccup. I've wanted to read along with the audio and had to wait for one format to become available.

Car mode! I need an app where the audiobook player has a super simple, big-button interface for driving. The reading part is irrelevant while driving. But switching between apps on a car dashboard is dangerous.

So my ideal 'dual-format' app would have a dedicated driving mode that's audio-only, but knows my reading progress. Most apps treat the audio player as an afterthought. Smart Audiobook Player is the best for driving, but it doesn't know about my ebooks. Again, fragmentation.

Battery life is a thing. Streaming audiobooks from Libby or Scribd uses more battery than playing a downloaded file. Ebook reading uses almost none.

If you're on a long trip, an app that aggressively caches and manages downloads for both formats is key. The Kindle app is great at this; it's very efficient. Some of the smaller apps are battery hogs. Always check battery usage in your settings after using a new book app for a while.

I use Voice Dream Reader for this, but it's a different approach. It's a text-to-speech app that can turn any ebook (EPUB, PDF) you load into it into an audiobook with a synthesized voice. You buy the app once, add your own files, and it becomes a unified reader/listener for your personal library.

The voices are surprisingly good with premium downloads, but it's not a professional narration. For public domain books or things not available as audio, it's a game-changer. It's not for purchasing content, but for consuming your existing ebook library audibly, it's a powerful single Android app.

My two cents: start with Libby. It's free, legal, has a great UX, and connects you to your local library. If after a few months you find its selection or wait times limiting, then explore subscriptions like Everand or start strategically buying Kindle/Google Play combos on sale. But Libby is the undeniable, ethical, cost-free champion for most people's needs.

I keep a list in my notes app of 'Free Audiobook Sources'. LibriVox, Loyal Books, the podcast method, YouTube channels like 'Greatest AudioBooks', and library apps. For ebooks, it's Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, library apps, and Kindle freebies. I don't rely on one app. I have a folder on my phone called 'Reading' with Libby, Kindle, Play Books, and Podcast Addict. Each has its purpose. This decentralized method is chaotic but ensures I always have something to read or listen to, for free.

Are you in the UK? If so, BorrowBox is fantastic and works exactly how you described. My local library partnership gives me access to their whole collection. The app itself is pretty smooth, and I love that my progress syncs between the ebook and audiobook versions of the same title. It's not perfect—the UI can be a little clunky sometimes—but for a free service funded by libraries, it's incredible.

CloudLibrary is another library-based option that's pretty decent. The interface feels a bit dated, but the sync between text and audio for a single title is reliable. You don't get fancy features, but the core promise—stop reading, start listening from the same spot—works consistently. For free access through libraries, it's a strong, no-fuss choice. Sometimes smoothness is just about reliability, not flashy animations.

Consider the platform, not just the app. If you're deep in the Amazon ecosystem (Kindle, Audible), use their apps and stick to titles available in both formats. If you're a Google person, use Play Books. Your choice of app is kind of made for you by where you buy your content. Interoperability between different stores is a fantasy.

I get analysis paralysis with all these options. Sometimes I just want someone to tell me the single best one to try first. So, for anyone feeling that: get a library card if you don't have one. Download Libby. Try it. It's the closest to a magic, free, legal, all-in-one solution for normal books. If your library's selection is bad, then try the Scribd free trial. If you only read classics, go to Gutenberg and Librivox. But start with Libby. It's the most straightforward and socially beneficial answer. Everything else is a workaround or a temporary fix.

Which books read app supports audiobooks and ebooks?

I’ve tried almost every app out there. For a seamless experience, 'Audible' is my top pick—it has an insane library of audiobooks, and the whisper-sync feature lets you switch between reading and listening effortlessly. 'Libby' is another favorite, especially if you have a library card; it offers free access to both formats, though the selection depends on your local library. For ebook enthusiasts who dabble in audiobooks, 'Kindle' integrates smoothly with Audible, letting you pick up where you left off. 'Scribd' is a hidden gem with a subscription model that includes audiobooks, ebooks, and even magazines. If you’re into indie authors or classics, 'Hoopla' is worth checking out—it’s free and works with libraries too. Each app has its quirks, but these are the ones I keep coming back to for their reliability and variety.

I tried a bunch of these, and the fragmentation is annoying. Libby for most things, Hoopla for comics and no-wait audio, and then my library also uses CloudLibrary for some exclusive titles. They all do ebooks and audiobooks, but you need to check which ones your specific library subscribes to. It's not one app to rule them all; it's about which apps your library card works with.
