I joined a local indie bookstore's subscription. They send me a curated book every month, always a surprise. That's twelve books predetermined for my year. My personal list is everything else I want to read around those twelve surprises. It takes the pressure off—half my reading is already chosen by a pro with great taste. It's introduced me to authors I'd never have found on my own. The rest of my list is just for fun, guilt-free exploration.

I let book covers decide. I know, I know, don't judge a book by its cover. But I do! I'll browse shelves (physical or digital) and any cover that makes me stop scrolling gets a closer look. I read the synopsis. If it's still interesting, on the list it goes. My list becomes a collection of beautiful art that also promises a good story. It's a highly subjective, visual-first approach that has led me to some stunning, under-the-radar books I'd never have found via traditional recommendations.

Physical space dictates my list. I have one small shelf designated 'To Read This Year.' When I buy or borrow a book, it goes there. Once the shelf is full, I'm not allowed to add more until I've read and removed some. The visual of a full shelf is a powerful motivator. The list is literally the titles on that shelf. It's a constant, gentle reminder, and there's a huge satisfaction in pulling a book off and leaving an empty space to be filled.

I set a rule: for every new release I add, I have to add one book that's at least 20 years old. It's too easy to get swept up in the hype of what's coming out now. Why limit it to yearly? My club rotates theme months, and we let whoever hosts that month pick the romance sub-genre. February is obviously for contemporary, but August was 'historical heatwave,' and someone picked a pirate romance that was absolutely bonkers in the best way.
The key is variety and veto power. We have a shared Google Sheet where everyone drops a few dream titles, then we vote. The rule is you can't just add Sarah J. Maas or Colleen Hoover every time; you have to dig up something new or an underrated author. It forces discovery.
We also slot in one 'wild card' quarter where we read a romance-adjacent book, like a romantic fantasy or a mystery with a strong romantic subplot. Keeps the palate fresh and the discussions from getting repetitive.
