Library sales and used bookstores are my plan's downfall and its salvation. I'll go in with a list from the 'best of' articles, but I'll always come out with three completely different books that caught my eye. So my plan has two tracks: the intentional list and the serendipitous finds. The finds often end up being the highlights of my year. The plan provides direction, but the detours provide joy.

Mix in other media. Is there a 'best of' book that's also a celebrated audiobook? A graphic novel adaptation? Sometimes experiencing the story in a different format can be the key to getting through it. My plan might include listening to a challenging nonfiction book and reading its graphic novel companion piece. It's a more holistic, and often easier, way to absorb the 'top' content of the year.

Let's be real, half the fun is in the curation. I spend a happy December afternoon collating lists from my favorite sources into a big spreadsheet. I note the books that appear on multiple lists—those are the priority. Then, I sprinkle in a few oddballs that caught only one critic's eye but sound fascinating. The act of building the plan is a hobby in itself. By the time January comes, I'm so excited about my personalized menu that diving in is effortless.

Has anyone else found that the number one book on every list is almost never the one that resonates most? I use the top books as a starting point for rabbit holes. I'll read the summary of the #1 fantasy novel, then look at the author's influences, then find the 'best of' lists from the year those influences were published. My yearly plan becomes a deep dive into a specific lineage or subgenre, way more rewarding than just skimming the current surface. You end up with a much richer understanding of where today's 'top' books even came from.

This book isn’t for the faint of heart because once you enter The Pleasure Archive, there is no turning back.

From the strict control of her possessive professor, she is pushed into the merciless empire of a cold billionaire CEO who turns her into his personal office whore, making her drip with his load while she works. I let book covers decide. I know, I know, don't judge a book by its cover. But I do! I'll browse shelves (physical or digital) and any cover that makes me stop scrolling gets a closer look. I read the synopsis. If it's still interesting, on the list it goes. My list becomes a collection of beautiful art that also promises a good story. It's a highly subjective, visual-first approach that has led me to some stunning, under-the-radar books I'd never have found via traditional recommendations.
I read the negative reviews of a top-rated book first. Not the trollish ones, but the thoughtful 2 or 3-star reviews. If their criticisms sound like things that would bother me too ('the ending felt rushed,' 'the protagonist was passive'), I might pass. But if their complaints are about things I love ('the magic system wasn't explained enough,' 'too much philosophical digression'), I move it to the top of my list. It's a brilliant inversion of the recommendation engine.
Honestly, my local indie bookseller picks my top five. I go in, tell them the last three books I loved, and ask what I should read next. Their recommendations are never wrong. They have this magical ability to match a person with a book.
Supporting a local bookstore and getting a curated, personal recommendation is a win-win. Those hand-sold books often become my favorites of the year. It's a human algorithm that's far superior to any online one. My list has a lot more surprise and delight this way.
