Honestly, a lot of it boils down to communication failure amplified by their personalities. Aizawa expects directness and self-preservation; Izuku communicates through muttering and self-sacrifice. The plot often forces a crisis where that gap becomes dangerous. I'm partial to stories where the conflict is external—like a villain targeting their contrasting styles—rather than internal melodrama. It feels fresher.
Yeah, the classic is definitely the secret-identity clash. Izuku hiding OFA from Aizawa, Aizawa figuring it out and feeling betrayed, the whole trust thing. It's a reliable source of angst. But what really grinds my gears is when it's paired with sudden, out-of-character paternalism from Aizawa. He's not a dad, he's a tired man who expels students. I prefer fics where the conflict stays professional, maybe a clash over risk assessment during a joint mission. Izuku's stats-based planning versus Aizawa's instinct. Less weeping, more tactical arguments.
There's also the less common but fun 'rival mentor' plot, where All Might and Aizawa disagree on Izuku's training, and Izuku's caught in the middle trying to please both. That creates a nice external conflict that doesn't force the relationship into a weird familial box. The resolution usually involves Izuku finding his own voice, which feels truer to his character arc anyway.
I keep running into this weird pattern where the fic wants them to be mentor-mentor so bad it bends the canon out of shape. You know the setup: Aizawa finds out about One For All, either through a slip or because All Might's an idiot, and suddenly he's taking Izuku on as his personal project. The conflict becomes about Aizawa's ‘hardened heart’ softening against his will and Izuku's ‘reckless self-sacrifice‘ driving him up the wall. It's always framed as Aizawa trying to make him more pragmatic, Midoriya clinging to his ideals, and the tension is whether they'll understand each other. Honestly, it can get repetitive. I'd rather see something where the conflict isn't about teaching methods, but about something like Aizawa discovering Izuku has a hidden analytical streak that borders on unethical vigilante logic, and he has to decide if that's a bug or a feature.
That, or the injury whump. Aizawa gets hurt protecting Izuku, Izuku blames himself, Aizawa is annoyed by the guilt. Rinse and repeat. It's a solid emotional engine, but after the tenth variation I start skimming.
A more interesting angle I stumbled on once was a conflict built around differing philosophies on what a hero even is—Aizawa's underground, information-focused pragmatism versus Izuku's very public, symbol-inspired hope. That has legs.

WE'RE BACK! Yes, your favorite cousins are back at it again, but this time it ain't about me. So, buckle up and grab your wine glasses, because it's gonna be crazy! Mina’s POV: Wait a damn minute. Am I in hell? Because if I am, I need to speak to HR. I didn't even get a chance to plead my case, give a reference or something. I'm about to start freaking out because, I'm not a “go to hell” and mean it type of person. I can't do heat for five minutes let alone an eternity. I feel like giving my life to save a baby and a man should have gotten me at least joint visitation six months in heaven and six months in hell. “Mina, are you awake?” I heard the voice quietly say next to my ear. I tried opening my eyes, but it felt like I had sand in them. I decided to try speaking, but only let out something that sounded like a sick animal. "Wait right there let me get you some water.” I heard a voice whisper again. Who the hell is that? I have heard that voice before but couldn't figure out who the hell it was. “! We need to move; they've found us.” The voice came again. Wait, what? Who the hell are they? I tried opening my eyes again, this time I managed to get them open enough to see the figure picking me up bridal style. Then the stranger turned his head to look directly in my eyes and I knew instantly who it was. “Blaze? You gotta be shitting me.” I said, obviously shocked. “Hey, can we join the party? I hope you are serving food because we are famished.” I heard a man say.

BOOK #1 MARINOS' MAYHEM SERIES
"I said 'act like my boyfriend' for just five minutes, not 'act like my fucking husband' for the rest of your life!" Adrian Price half-yelled, his fingers curled into a tight fist as he glared at the terrifying, yet super gorgeous man in front of him.
Giovanni Marino blinked slowly, taking his time to register every detail of Adrian's figure into his memory, not minding that he was disturbing his work at all.
"I don't see a big difference between the two."
"Oh, for fuck sake! You're a thug, but surely you're not dumb, are you? Do you not know when to stop?" Adrian scoffed, his anger growing thicker.
"Sadly, I don't seem to know what 'stop' means. You made the idea of being someone's boyfriend sound so great now I don't think I wanna stop."
Adrian Price knew asking a mobster to fake being his boyfriend would get a lot of unnecessary attention from lustful eyes off him, but what he never knew was that the man he had just picked was no different from the unwanted pests that lingered around him, wanting to have a taste of him.
Giovanni Marino enjoyed clubbing as much as he enjoyed killing; however, despite this, he was extremely lonely. Now, the big bad man had found a toy he could play with, and he was having the best fun of his life. Would he ever stop and return to his lonely life?
That, he wasn't sure he could do that. Not even when he realized Adrian was his enemy's son. He needed Adrian, either to break him or to make him.

Azxel never imagined that a simple transfer to a mental disorder school would change his life forever.
There, he meets Sky, a student so terrifying that even the police fear him. Rumors say he’s a murderer, violent and unpredictable, striking anyone who crosses him. But to Azxel, Sky isn’t just danger… he’s irresistible.
Drawn to the darkness that surrounds Sky, Azxel abandons the safety of friends and routines to follow him, to please him, to be near him. Every glance, every dangerous encounter, only fuels his obsession.
In a world where fear and desire collide, how far will Azxel go for love? And how much of Sky’s darkness can he survive before it consumes them both?
A weird number of writers keep circling back to the idea of Midoriya's relentless optimism being this corrosive force on Aizawa's carefully maintained emotional armor. Like, he's built this entire personality around being exhausted and detached from the whole hero system, and then this kid shows up who fundamentally believes in it with every fiber of his being. The conflict isn't just teacher-student; it's between nihilism and idealism. Does Aizawa's cynicism protect anyone, or is it just a shield against caring too much and getting hurt again? Does Midoriya's faith make him naive, or is it actually a strength Aizawa lost somewhere along the way? I see a lot of fics where Aizawa has to confront whether he's become the very kind of jaded hero he claims to despise, all because this one kid won't stop smiling through the blood and broken bones.
Then there's the whole guilt angle, which gets heavy. Fics love exploring Aizawa's potential failure to protect him, either during USJ or some other invented incident. That eats at him differently than other students because Midoriya's self-sacrificing nature feels like a direct challenge to Aizawa's role as a protector. The emotional conflict becomes about whether he can allow himself to care that deeply again, knowing the kid is basically a trauma magnet. It's less about romance sometimes and more about this profound, terrifying sense of responsibility that morphs into something else.
Ugh, the endless psychological torment some writers put Aizawa through in these is something else. You've got him grappling with his whole 'logical ruse' philosophy, trying to square his protective instincts with his belief in letting kids learn through harsh experience. Seeing Midoriya's self-destructive zeal up close forces a reevaluation he never signed up for.
Then there's the whole mentor-guilt spiral. If they're paired romantically, it adds this extra layer of 'I am so, so fired and also possibly a monster.' The age/power differential gets mined for maximum angst about corruption and crossing lines. But honestly? I sometimes skip those. I'm here for the quieter tension of two people who communicate primarily through action having to actually use words. When it's done right, it's less about grand drama and more about the sheer, awkward terror of admitting you care too much in a way the rulebook never covered.
My favorite conflicts are actually the external ones—how they'd hide it from the school, the other students, especially Bakugou. The fear of ruining Midoriya's future or Aizawa's career creates a different, more practical kind of pressure cooker.
I keep seeing these stories pop up everywhere now, but I gotta be honest, a lot of them feel pretty same-y after a while. The big one is always hurt/comfort, obviously. Aizawa finds Midoriya pushed too far or injured after training, and the whole thing becomes this soft caretaking scenario where Aizawa’s gruff exterior cracks. It’s a classic for a reason, I guess—that dynamic of the stern mentor finally showing he cares just hits right for some folks.
Beyond that, you get a ton of time travel AUs. Midoriya goes back to his first year with future knowledge, and Aizawa is the only one who notices something’s off. Those can be fun when they focus on the mystery and the slow build of trust, rather than just making Midoriya overpowered from the start. I’ve also read a few where their roles are reversed; Aizawa is the one who needs saving or gets hit with a quirk that makes him vulnerable, and Midoriya steps up. It’s a neat flip but harder to write convincingly.
Honestly, the themes are less about wild plots and more about exploring that specific mentor-student bond, just dialed way up. The appeal is in the gap between Aizawa’s perceived apathy and his actual deep investment, and Midoriya’s endless need for validation meeting someone who shows it through actions, not words. It’s all about the quiet moments in between the big hero stuff.
