All this talk makes me want to re-watch 'Sliders'. The 90s show was cheesy and the science was nonsense, but the core premise—a group sliding to a new parallel Earth every week—is pure wish fulfillment. Seeing a world where the Russians landed on the moon first, or where penicillin was never discovered, was just fun. It was a weekly 'what if' machine. It didn't need deep philosophy; it was an adventure anthology built on a great sci-fi hook. We need more shows with that simple, exploratory joy.
You know, I never got into the heavy sci-fi takes. I prefer when the parallel world is just there, accepted, and the story focuses on the characters dealing with it. Like in the manga 'Fushigi Yûgi', where the heroine is pulled into the world of a book. The mechanics aren't the point; it's about her relationships and survival in this new, magical reality. Sometimes the portal is just the doorway to a good story, and that's enough for me. Not everything needs a quantum mechanics explanation.
I keep thinking about the emotional resonance of these stories. It's not the physics that gets me, it's the 'what if I made that other choice?' pang. That's why stories like 'The Midnight Library' by Matt Haig, while not hard sci-fi, hit so hard for many people. A woman gets to try out all the lives she could have lived if she'd made different choices.
It's a therapeutic, life-affirming take on the concept. Critics call it simplistic, but for a reader going through regret, it can be a powerful comfort. It reduces the grand multiverse to a very personal, introspective scale, which is a valid and important approach to the idea.

If you want the parallel universe concept to be the entire point of the narrative structure, 'Life After Life' by Kate Atkinson is stunning. It follows Ursula Todd as she lives her life over and over again, dying and being reborn, with each iteration branching into a slightly different path. The depth comes from seeing how tiny choices ripple out into vastly different outcomes, exploring fate, chance, and resilience across dozens of parallel lives.
