it works just as well between iOS devices. You can buy books from Kobo or load EPUBs via Adobe Digital Editions, and your place follows you. The app's reading interface is clean and pleasant. It's a strong alternative if you prefer not to feed the Amazon machine and want a bookstore that isn't tied to a specific hardware ecosystem like Apple's.

Has the sync in the Kindle app ever glitched for anyone else? A couple of times, it's synced me to an older position, making me lose my recent progress. It's rare, but terrifying when it happens. Now I make a paranoid habit of manually syncing (pulling down on the library screen) before I switch devices. No system is perfect, I guess, but it's made me appreciate the offline bookmarking in simpler apps that don't try to be so smart.

I've given up on a single app. I use Kindle for Amazon purchases, Apple Books for PDFs and design books (because the rendering is better), and Libby for library books. They all sync within their own walls perfectly. My 'system' is just knowing where to look. It's not elegant, but it works. Trying to find one app to rule them all always leads to compromise on content access, formatting, or features. Sometimes fragmentation is the price of freedom.

I rely on a combination. Kindle for most commercial books and Libby for library loans. Both have perfect sync. I tried to consolidate into one app, but each has strengths for its specific content type. As long as I remember which app a particular book is in, it's fine. My brain has adapted to having two 'reading centers.' It's not ideal, but it gives me the best access to the widest range of material with reliable cross-device functionality.

My partner and I share a Kindle account, and the sync can get confusing because it tries to sync between our two phones. We had to turn off Whispersync for the account and just use it per device. So, a word of warning: if you share an account with someone, the 'perfect sync' can become a nightmare, jumping you into the book they're reading. Make sure you use household sharing features or separate profiles if possible. The feature designed for convenience can backfire in shared scenarios.

The iBooks Author format (.iba) is a thing, but nobody uses it. Moving on.

I tried BookFusion based on a comment here and… it’s okay. The sync works, but the free tier is quite limited in storage (100MB). If you read mostly text-based EPUBs, that’s a lot of books, but a few PDFs will eat it up. The interface feels a bit slow compared to native apps. It’s a viable option if you’re dedicated to an open, non-corporate platform and don’t mind the limits or potentially paying later. For unlimited free sync, Google Play Books or the Kindle personal document method are still more generous.

For public domain classics, the Standard Ebooks project is amazing. They make beautifully formatted, free EPUBs. If you download one and put it in Google Play Books, you now have a gorgeous, synced copy of 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'Dracula' on all your devices. It's a fantastic combination of high-quality, free content and a free, syncing reading platform. Makes diving into the classics incredibly easy and pleasant.

Aldiko is a classic, but the older Aldiko Book Reader (not Aldiko Next) doesn't do cloud sync in the free version. You'd need the paid upgrade for that. So, scratch that one off your list if sync is a must-have for no cost.

I wish Goodreads would properly integrate with Kindle or other apps to auto-sync progress. The manual update is a chore. Imagine finishing a chapter on your Kindle and having your Goodreads status auto-update. That's the dream. The technology is obviously there; it's a business deal problem. Until then, our progress exists in separate silos: one for reading, one for social.

For purely organizational syncing—keeping your library and collections the same across devices—Google Play Books and Kindle are top. For progress syncing, they’re also top. But if you want to annotate and highlight, and have those sync too, Kindle is the strongest. My highlights and notes appear on all my devices and are even accessible on the web. Google Play Books does this too, but I find its note-taking interface less polished. If you’re a student or someone who actively engages with text, this is a huge factor. The free app becomes a powerful study tool when all your annotations are always with you.
