The prose becomes so rhythmic it's almost like reading music. Long, flowing sentences build to a crescendo, then a short, sharp one for impact. You can hear the cadence of Southern storytelling in it. This musicality is there in embryo early on but becomes the dominant mode later. It's why many people read him aloud—to feel the rhythm.
His endings become less conventionally satisfying. Early books often wrapped up the mystery, punished the guilty. Later endings are more open, melanchodic, with justice often feeling partial or elusive. It's a more realistic, and arguably more artistically honest, reflection of the world Dave inhabits. The victory is survival, not triumph.
The use of foreshadowing gets heavier and more literary. Early books used it for thriller tension. Later, it feels like tragic foreshadowing, a sense of inevitable doom hanging over even the quiet moments. It creates a powerful, melancholic atmosphere where you feel the weight of consequences before they even happen.

Taking a shortcut through a dark and remote alley on Halloween night proved to be a life changing decision of research scientist, Jasper Greene.
Bitten by a zombie and brutally attacked by a group of werewolves, he was left for dead only to be discovered and rescued by a vampire king who took him home to heal. Delighted to discover that Jasper's research was on genetics with a focus on elongating life (for which he often used himself as a test subject due to lack of money), the vampire king assigned him the task of shifting the vampire DNA so that it was less obvious what they were when in the company of humans. With his assistant, Lila, in tow he was provided a lab and set to work. With toxins from werewolves and zombies mingling with the vampire blood he was provided during his healing time, Jasper struggled to adjust to his new body while he did his best to accommodate the vampires until the opportunity to escape presented itself. But, where does a man who has vampire, werewolf and zombie traits go?
"The Beginning", is book 1 of the Jasper series.
If you enjoy analyzing structure, start with 'Heaven's Prisoners'. It's a classic noir setup—a troubled protagonist, a mysterious woman from the past, a spiral of violence—executed with literary brilliance. You can see the bones of the genre he's working within, and then appreciate how he fleshes them out with his unique voice. It's a great study in how to elevate genre fiction.
