What about the comic/graphic novel scene? 'Aghori' by Ram V and others, or Vivek Goel’s work at Holy Cow Entertainment? They're doing this blend visually, mixing traditional iconography with noir, horror, and superhero aesthetics. An Aghori ascetic solving supernatural crimes in modern Kolkata, or a reimagining of Ravana as a complex anti-hero. The visual medium allows for a seamless mix of ancient design and modern cityscapes. It’s a different kind of effectiveness—it hits you on an immediate, visceral level. The stories often tackle contemporary social issues through these mythological proxies.
It’s a thriving, exciting space for this kind of fusion.
The audiobook performances for a lot of these are next-level. A good narrator can bring out the rhythm in the prose, whether it’s the grand, epic tone or the snappy modern dialogue. Hearing a skilled voice actor perform the dialogues of Krishna or Shiva in a contemporary retelling adds a whole new dimension to the blend. It feels like oral storytelling tradition meeting modern audio technology. I’d recommend trying the audio version, especially for authors like Amish or Chitra, where the performance can really enhance the drama and make the characters pop.
I keep a separate shelf just for this genre, and my most re-read book is probably 'The Forest of Enchantments' by Chitra Divakaruni. Retelling the Ramayana from Sita’s view, it just nails the emotional interiority. It makes Sita’s choices, anger, and resilience feel utterly contemporary. The blend is seamless because the core emotions—love, betrayal, duty, pride—are timeless. She doesn’t need to put Sita in jeans; she just gives her a voice any modern person can understand and empathize with. The setting remains ancient, but the psychological landscape is modern.
It made me cry, which few mythology retellings manage to do.
Can we talk about the audio drama 'Mahabharata Murders'? It’s not a book, but it’s a fantastic example of this blend in a new medium. It’s a detective procedural where the clues and motives are pulled directly from the Mahabharata, set in modern-day Delhi. The effectiveness comes from the audio format—the voices, the sounds of the city, the tension feel immediate, while the mythological framework provides the depth. It shows that this fusion isn’t just for novels anymore. Podcasts and audio series are becoming a great place to experience these stories with a contemporary rhythm and pacing.
The video game 'Raji: An Ancient Epic' is a perfect example of this blend in another medium. It’s not a book, but it’s a stunning visual and interactive retelling of Hindu and Balinese mythology. Playing as Raji fighting demons to save her brother, you see the stories come alive in a way pure prose can’t match. It shows that the effectiveness of blending mythology with modern narrative isn’t confined to fiction. Game mechanics, art, and music can create an immersive experience that teaches the myths through action. It’s a huge part of the modern pan-entertainment landscape.
If you love this fusion, support projects like that too.

They weren't supposed to exist, yet here they are.
"We have to keep them protected" Zeus roars.
"That doesn't mean we have to keep them locked up." Aphrodite states.
The gods turn as they hear the door opens slamming against the wall. There stand the triples. A look of surprise spreads across everyone's face.
"What the hell did you do to your hair and are those tattoos?" Poseidon asks.
"We dyed it, and yes they are tattoos and we also got a few body piercings" Kylani answers.
"We will not stay hidden away or kept locked up. We have no interest in this life. We are going to walk on the earth with the supernatural and humans. They accept us more than you do." Mykenzie announces.
The girls vanish at that moment. Chris stands there with a look of regret in his eyes. He knew this was coming. They wanted sweet, innocent goddesses like their mother and aunts. What they got was an attitude in a 5'4" package only doubled.

This is “Burning Embers: Scorching Tales of Desire”
A collection of BL short stories carved from lust, laced with obsession, and kissed by chaos.
Each chapter stands on its own, a world where strangers become addictions, roommates cross lines, enemies blur into lovers, and the line between want and need snaps without warning.
These men don’t fall in love.
They fall into temptation.
They crash into each other like lightning against the sea, loud, unforgiving, and beautiful in their destruction.
You’ll find no gentle romance here.
Only the ache of fingertips brushing where they shouldn't, the weight of glances held too long, the gasp before the plunge.
This is for the ones who know love isn’t always tender.
That sometimes, the most unforgettable stories are the ones written in bruises and longing.
This is for those who crave stories that leave a mark, who don’t flinch when desire gets messy, when hearts bleed a little before they beat as one.
Not for the faint-hearted.
Not for the clean-handed.
This is for the bold, the brave, the ones who dare to touch the flame even if it burns.
So turn the page.
Step into the fire.
But don’t say I didn’t warn you---
Because once the embers catch, they never go out.

Silence can be a powerful tool in this blend. Not every mythical element needs to be explained. The best horror and weird fiction writers know this. A story where the characters in a modern apartment block hear strange, unplaceable chanting during a power cut, or find inexplicable patterns in the dust—never fully explained as 'this is a pisacha'—can be more chilling and mythic than a full-blown demon battle.
The sense of the ancient pushing through the cracks of the modern world, unexplained and perhaps unexplainable, preserves the mystery and awe that is core to mythology. I'd love to see more authors embrace that subtle, eerie approach. It requires restraint and trust in the reader's imagination. Sometimes the most effective blend is just a hint, a whisper of something older and stranger brushing against the sterile edges of contemporary life.
I'm skeptical of some of these 'mythological fiction' bestsellers. They can sometimes flatten the complexity of the epics into simple good-vs-evil or self-help narratives. The original myths are so wonderfully ambiguous and troubling. The best blends, for me, retain that moral ambiguity and translate it into modern terms, not just swap out chariots for cars.
Comparative mythology is a fun lens. Some authors don't just blend Indian myths with modern life; they intentionally juxtapose them with Greek, Norse, or other mythologies. A character might be a scholar who sees parallels between Krishna and Hercules, or the plot might involve a convergence of pantheons in a global crisis. This universalizes the themes while still rooting the primary perspective in the Indian tradition. It's a blend on two levels: myth with modernity, and myth with other myths, suggesting a shared human storytelling impulse beneath the cultural specifics.
