I'm just here for the Kate and John banter. Their dynamic is the heart of the series for me. So I'd say the essential order is the one that tracks their relationship: 'Plum Island' (meet cute-ish), 'The Lion's Game' (working together), 'Night Fall' (deep partnership), 'Wild Fire' (major test). After that, it's an established marriage, which has its own charm but less of the will-they-won't-they tension. So if that's your draw, the first four in order are perfection.

Kate Mayfield is a key reason to follow the order. She's introduced in 'Plum Island' as an FBI agent. Their professional and personal relationship develops over several books. If you read a later book where they're already married, you miss all the friction and chemistry that made them interesting. Their banter is a highlight, and it evolves from professional rivalry to partnership. Skipping ahead flattens that arc. So for the romance subplot alone, go chronological.

One minor benefit of publication order: you catch the contemporary references. When Corey makes a joke about a late-90s celebrity or tech in 'Plum Island', it's of its time. In a 2015 book, he's joking about different things. Reading them in sequence is a fun cultural timeline. It dates the books, but in a charming way. It adds to the period-piece feel of the earlier entries, which are now historical thrillers in their own right.

My advice is to read them in order, but don't binge them back-to-back. Corey's voice is very distinctive — that sarcastic, first-person, talking-to-the-reader style. Reading them all in quick succession can make his schtick feel repetitive. Space them out with other books. That way, each time you return to him, it's like catching up with a familiar, funny, and frustrating friend. You'll appreciate the continuity of his life more if you're not overwhelmed by his personality in a short span.

Honestly, I find Corey increasingly insufferable in the later books. His schtick wears thin. I'd recommend reading the first three — 'Plum Island,' 'The Lion's Game,' 'Night Fall' — in order, as a fantastic trilogy. After that, consider each book a separate optional adventure. The quality and your tolerance for his attitude may vary. So, a strict order is crucial for that initial trilogy, but you can be more flexible after that if you're still invested.

“I'm so sorry, Leo,” I rasped, my voice barely a whisper. Tears of guilt and self-blame streamed down my cheeks as I stood before him, eyes cast downward. Despite the fact that I was his prisoner and he was my warden, I couldn't bear the thought of anything bad happening to him. I told him, “It's my fault. I shouldn't have let you go-”
“Damn it, Alessandra. I don't want your apology,” Leonardo snapped, lifting my chin with a firm finger, forcing me to meet his gaze. His voice was hard as steel as he continued, “I want you to write a fucking essay about how much you think about me. How you crave my touch. I want to hear you say you love me, because I swear it in this life, mia principessa, there won't be anyone else but me.”
