From a purely analytical standpoint, the popular pairings map directly onto narrative tension and unresolved character threads. The Jinsoyun/Player Character ship is fundamentally about power imbalance and ideological corruption, offering a rich vein for psychological exploration or dark romance. Yura/Soha provides a classic framework of historical intimacy fractured by conflict, ideal for tragedy or reconciliation arcs. These are the primary engines.
Secondary clusters form around characters with significant screen time and clear motivations, such as Lusung or Yunwa, often paired with the player avatar as a vehicle for exploring specific faction loyalties. Cross-faction pairings, like a Gon of the Stratus Empire with a Jin from the Crimson Legion, are less common but serve a clear world-building function, using romance to interrogate the game’s political divisions. The data suggests readers seek to either deepen the game’s central emotional conflicts or resolve its peripheral character silences through relational dynamics.

I keep noticing a really clear pattern in the 'Blade & Soul' fics I stumble across. Jinsoyun and Jin female protagonist seems to dominate a huge chunk of the content, especially on Archive of Our Own. There’s something about that student-mentor dynamic gone completely sideways that writers just can’t leave alone—the betrayal, the complicated legacy, the potential for redemption or darker revenge fantasies. It’s the central tragedy of the game, so it makes sense it fuels so many stories.
Beyond that, Yura and Soha have a massive following. Their established rivalry-with-history is basically a gift for slow-burn or enemies-to-lovers plots. I see a lot of authors filling in the gaps between their canon interactions, exploring what might have been before everything fell apart. It’s less about the main storyline and more about deepening the side characters in a way the game only hints at.
A pairing I find weirdly compelling but see less often is Gon and the Lyn player character. The contrast in size and personality opens up for some genuinely funny or unexpectedly sweet domestic fluff, a nice break from all the world-ending drama. I wish more people played with that dynamic. Most of the active fandom seems firmly camped in the Jinsoyun or Yura/Soha territories, though you’ll find the occasional Hazuki or Mushin-centric oddity if you dig deep enough.

Honestly, half the fun is finding the rare pairs. Everyone knows about Jinsoyun/MC and Yura/Soha—they’re practically canon-adjacent. But I got hooked on this one series that paired Juwol with a cynical, world-weary Gon force master. The writer completely recontextualized Juwol’s cheerful demeanor as a kind of quiet resilience, and the Gon’s grumpy exterior slowly melting was just... chef’s kiss. It wasn’t epic, just two people finding a sliver of peace in a messed-up world. Those are the fics that stick with me more than the big dramatic retellings. The fandom feels smaller these days, so when you find a writer exploring a niche like that, you treasure it.

Yura and Soha. It’s always Yura and Soha. The amount of fanart alone should tell you something. Sometimes I think people just like the aesthetic—two elegant, tragic women with a complicated past. The fics range from angsty pre-fall stories to modern AUs where they’re rival baristas. It’s kind of the default if you’re not into the main story drama. I’ve read a few that made me see their canon scenes completely differently, which is the best a fanfic can do really.

I can't believe we're still having this discussion when the Archive of Our Own tag for 'Blade & Soul' exists and is completely free of the weird restrictions other places have. It's the archive for a reason, you know? You can sort by kudos, filter out crossovers if that's not your thing, and the tagging system means you can actually find those dense, lore-heavy fics where someone's decided to expand the entire Hongmoon School backstory. I found one last year that was practically a thesis on the Stratus Empire's political structure, complete with original characters that didn't feel like self-inserts.
Sure, you have to wade through some shorter pieces, but the detailed ones are usually tagged as such. Wattpad and Fanfiction.net are okay for a quick read, but the really epic, chapter-after-chapter stuff tends to migrate to AO3 because the writers want the control over tags and series organization. Just set your word count filter high.
