Lurking here because I've always been intimidated by Patterson's bibliography. Seeing all these takes is helpful, though. Maybe I'll just start with that one everyone mentions, 'Along Came a Spider'. Sounds like a safe bet.
Meh, I tried one once. The chapters were too short. Felt like being on a literary sugar rush. Not for me. I'll stick with stuff that lets a scene breathe a little.
I read 'Cross' (which is like, the 17th Alex Cross book?) first because it was on sale. Then I went back to the start. It was actually a cool experience in reverse engineering the character. I kept thinking, 'Oh, so THAT’s how he got that scar,' or 'Now I understand his tension with that police chief.'
It wasn't the intended way, but it added a layer of detective work to my reading—piecing together the backstory. Not recommending it as a plan, but saying if you accidentally start in the middle, it's not ruined. You just get a different perspective on the character's history.
Think about your reading personality. Are you a marathoner or a sampler? Marathoners should pick one series (likely Alex Cross) and run through it in order for that cumulative effect. Samplers should pick book one of three different series (e.g., Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Private) and see which protagonist's world they want to live in for a while.
Your natural inclination will lead you to the right approach. Forcing a marathon when you're a sampler will make it feel like a chore. Patterson is the opposite of chore-like reading, so let your habits guide your entry point. Order becomes relevant only after you've chosen your favorite 'world.'
You know, I tried reading in strict order once. Made it through about fifteen Cross books before I burned out. The formula became too apparent. My advice? Mix it up. Read an Alex Cross, then a standalone thriller like 'The President Is Missing', then a Women's Murder Club.
This prevents the repetitive rhythm from dulling the impact. The 'order' within each series still helps, but breaking the monotony kept me engaged with Patterson's world for much longer. It's more about pacing yourself through the style than following a rigid chronology.

I'm glad I finally got rid of you why would I want to come running back to you Ash?" I feel my heart shattered into a million pieces as I hear him say those hurtful words.

From USA Today bestselling author and the author of Billionaire’s Secret Baby, comes a brand-new suspenseful romance about a socialite falling in love with the man ordered to protect her. With one hell of a twist, this steamy romance is a must read!
Agent Scott Tabor was as sexy walking away as he was coming toward you. You know the kind of attractive that makes your mouth dry, and your palms sweat before you ever speak to the man? Yeah… that’s my reality.
But let’s back up a second.
It all started a few weeks after my parents died in a freak accident. While I was trying to grieve, my long-lost uncle came into the picture. At first, I thought Uncle Frank was trying to make an effort—until I came home to a nightmare.
Forced to abandon my apartment, I turned to my lawyer and old boyfriend, Nate Livingston. Only his very pregnant wife wasn’t too happy with me hanging around. And who could blame her?
Meanwhile, Uncle Frank was doing everything in his power to make my life a living hell.
Enter Scott Tabor, FBI agent extraordinaire and my new roommate. I’m sure we can keep everything platonic. After all, we are both adults. Adults with wants, needs, and dare I say, an insane attraction for each other?
It depends what you're escaping from. Stressed from work? Go for Michael Bennett. The family chaos is weirdly comforting and hilarious amid the crime. Need a jolt of adrenaline? Go 'Private'. Miss classic detective vs. genius killer tropes? That's Alex Cross, baby.
Patterson has a flavor for every mood. I'd almost recommend choosing based on your current life stress level rather than some 'optimal' order. The man is a mood-based author, not a lore-heavy one.
