Publication order is the standard, but it doesn't matter that much. They're mostly standalone. I read 'Hound of the Baskervilles' first because it was the only one my library had, then jumped to 'The Final Problem.' I was totally confused about who this Moriarty guy was, but it was still a great story. Just grab any collection and dive in. The joy is in the individual mysteries, not some grand series arc.

so I'm firmly in the 'publication order' camp for first-time readers. Start with 'A Study in Scarlet.' It's the very first one, where Watson and Holmes meet, and you get that perfect introduction to 221B Baker Street. It just feels right to experience the stories as the original audience did, watching the characters and their world develop over time. Skipping around can ruin some of the continuity, like Watson's shoulder wound moving around or the fact he gets married.

That said, if someone finds 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' more appealing and it gets them hooked, that's fine too. But for the full, classic experience, publication order is the way to go. I'm rereading them that way now, and it's a different pleasure than just picking a favorite case at random.

Honestly? I tell everyone to start with 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,' the first short story collection. 'A Study in Scarlet' and 'The Sign of Four' are fine, but they're a bit slower and the novels have these weird digressions. The short stories are where Conan Doyle really hit his stride – 'A Scandal in Bohemia,' 'The Red-Headed League,' they're all tight, clever puzzles. You get hooked immediately on the formula.

Once you're addicted from the short stories, then go back and read the novels for the deeper lore, or just continue in order. But if you start with a novel and find it draggy, you might give up, and that would be a tragedy. The short stories are the gateway drug.

What is the reading order for Sherlock Holmes stories?

I basically got into Holmes as a complete mess – found 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' first because it was a standalone movie, then stumbled into 'A Study in Scarlet'. If you're aiming for a proper experience, publication order is the move. Start with the novels: 'A Study in Scarlet' introduces Watson and Holmes meeting, 'The Sign of the Four' comes next, then you can jump into the short stories. The first two short story collections, 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes', are where the character really hits his stride. After that, 'The Hound' is a novel again, then the later collections like 'The Return' and 'His Last Bow'. The publication order isn't just chronological; you see Conan Doyle's writing evolve, and the little references between stories actually land. Skipping around ruins some of the callbacks, like the mention of the 'Giant Rat of Sumatra' you only get if you've read the earlier ones. Honestly, 'The Case-Book' can feel a bit uneven, but it's worth it for a few gems. The whole thing is a slow build of their friendship, which gets dismantled if you read out of order.

How do the Sherlock Holmes stories rank by original publication order?

The ultimate test: try to explain the publication order to a friend without their eyes glazing over. If you can make it exciting—'It's a saga of death, resurrection, and monkey glands!'—you've won. The order is a story in itself, a meta-narrative about an author and his creation. That's what makes it worth exploring, beyond just a checklist of titles.
