Don't forget the Tralfamadorians! They first appear in 'The Sirens of Titan' as Salo's people and then become central to 'Slaughterhouse-Five' with their view of time. While more prominent in the novels, their philosophy—that moments just are, and we should focus on the good ones—permeates the tone of all his later stories.

I always felt the connections were accidental, a byproduct of a writer working through the same big questions for decades. He had a mental drawer full of names, ideas, and places, and he'd pull from it without worrying about continuity. The consistency comes from his unique brain, not from a master plan.

So it goes. That's the link. Three words that sum up the entire philosophy. Any character who understands that phrase, or lives by it, is a citizen of Vonnegut's world. They're all connected by that shared, weary acceptance of the universe's indifference.

I get why people ask this, but it's the wrong question for Vonnegut. Asking about recurring characters is like asking about the individual brushstrokes that link a painter's different works. The link is the painter's hand, his vision, his color palette. The subjects are secondary to the perspective that frames them.

Lurking here and taking notes. My to-read list just exploded. Thanks, I think?

Which Kurt Vonnegut short stories best showcase his dark humor?

Gonna throw in a curveball: some of his prefaces and intros to story collections are miniature masterpieces of dark humor. The one where he diagrams story shapes, or explains how his agent told him to stop writing stuff that was so depressing. He turns the process of writing and selling stories into its own meta-commentary. The humor is self-deprecating and industry-savvy. He's laughing at himself, at the publishing world, at the audience's expectations. It's a different flavor from the fiction, but it comes from the same place—a weary, kind, but unflinching look at the absurdity of it all. Even his non-fiction asides are lessons in how to find the joke in the machinery.

How do Kurt Vonnegut’s short stories explore war and trauma?

Lurking this thread has been great. I never connected his short stories to his broader themes so clearly. I just finished 'Cat's Cradle' and am gonna dive into the short story collections next. This discussion gave me a much better lens to read them with. Thanks, all.
