Been chasing this exact vibe since my own breakup last year. You might want to look at 'The Flatshare' by Beth O'Leary. The male lead, Leon, is dealing with a past relationship that went horribly wrong, and the whole story is about him slowly opening up again through these notes he exchanges with his new roommate. It's less about a dramatic revenge arc and more about quiet healing, which felt so much more real to me. The heartbreak is a quiet, persistent ache for him, not just a plot device.
I think what makes it work is that his emotional journey is given equal weight to the romance that develops. He has to learn to communicate and trust, and it's messy. It's one of the few books where I felt the guy's perspective on love and loss was genuinely nuanced.

Finally, a video game novelization that fits: 'The Last of Us' (various novelizations/adaptions). Joel's heartbreak is the foundational trauma of the story—losing his daughter Sarah at the start of the outbreak. It defines every brutal, survivalist choice he makes for twenty years.
His relationship with Ellie is a long, painful, reluctant overcoming of that heartbreak. He doesn't get over it; he learns to love again in spite of it, to accept the terrifying vulnerability of caring for another child. It's the ultimate story of a broken man finding a reason to be human again, even if the path is dark and the ending morally complex. The romance isn't traditional, but the love story between a surrogate father and daughter is one of the most powerful in any medium.

Maybe 'The Simple Wild' by K.A. Tucker. Jonah is a classic Alaska bush pilot, gruff and deeply rooted in his remote home. His heartbreak is the abandonment by his mother and, later, the complex relationship with his father. He's built a life that minimizes the risk of that kind of hurt again—it's isolated and on his terms.
Calla's arrival, representing the urban world that took his family away, forces all those old wounds open. His overcoming is about forgiving, understanding different forms of love, and learning that letting someone in doesn't automatically mean they'll leave. The Alaskan setting mirrors his character—beautiful but harsh, requiring resilience. The emotional thaw is as satisfying as the romance.

Honestly, most romance with a male POV I stumble into is either fantasy or sci-fi adjacent. Take 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' by TJ Klune—it's not a traditional romance novel, but the central relationship is profoundly romantic. The protagonist, Linus, starts off utterly heartbroken by life itself, crushed by loneliness and routine. His entire world is grey and bureaucratic.
Watching him slowly thaw in the face of chaotic magic and unexpected affection is the ultimate heartbreak recovery arc. It's about overcoming the heartbreak of a life not fully lived. The romantic payoff is incredibly sweet precisely because you've seen him rebuild his capacity for joy from the ground up. It's a warm hug of a book that tackles healing in a really unique way.

I'd argue some of the best emotional growth for male characters happens in novels not strictly shelved as romance. 'The Song of Achilles' is a tragic, beautiful love story where Achilles' growth (and lack thereof) is the tragedy. His journey from a passionate youth to a prideful, grieving warrior is driven by his love for Patroclus.
Look for books where the romantic relationship is the catalyst for the protagonist to fix his own mess. In 'Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine,' the male lead, Raymond, is not the protagonist, but his friendship (with romantic undertones) with Eleanor is crucial to her healing. From his perspective, the story is about how caring for someone else pulls him out of his own rut. It's a great look at how connection can be mutually therapeutic, even if the narrative isn't from his direct POV.
