Wait, has there been talk of one? Did someone hear a rumor? Because I could see a publisher floating the idea, especially after a big TV adaptation. But George seems like an author with full control. If she hasn't done it in all these years, she probably won't. Her focus seems to be on digging deeper into the main characters, even when it takes them to incredibly dark places, rather than expanding the franchise horizontally.
It's a very '90s approach to series writing, in the best way. Build one huge, complex story over decades, not a network of smaller ones.

I've read the entire series twice and can confirm there are no separate novel series featuring other characters. However, within the main series, certain books function almost like temporary spinoffs by giving immense focus to a supporting player. 'A Traitor to Memory' spends huge sections on the victim's family and their musician world, with Lynley and Havers almost as background figures. Similarly, 'Just One Evil Act' heavily follows Barbara's personal quest, almost sidelining Lynley.
So while there are no branded spin-offs, the narrative itself occasionally spins off into deep dives on other lives, always looping back to the central investigation.

I see people asking if they can skip the prequel, 'A Suitable Vengeance'. Don't. Even though it’s set earlier in Lynley’s life, it was published fourth and assumes you know the characters from the first three books. It reveals backstory about his family and his relationship with Simon St. James that has more impact if you’ve already spent time with them in the 'present' timeline.
Havers' fashion sense is tragically consistent across both media, so there's that. Order schmorder. The soul of the thing is intact. You get the brilliant, class-clashing partnership solving crimes. The specific case order is just the wrapping paper.
Libraries often have 'A Great Deliverance' in multiple copies because it's the first. If it's checked out, don't jump ahead. Wait for it. The introduction of Lynley and Havers is iconic, and you'll miss the foundation of their dynamic. I made that mistake with another series once and never really connected with the characters because I started in the middle. With Lynley, that initial clash of personalities—the polished earl vs. the disheveled detective—sets the tone for everything that follows. It's worth the wait on the hold list.
Look, if you're in it for the mysteries themselves, most are standalone. You could pick based on the setting—'Playing for the Ashes' for the cricket world, 'Missing Joseph' for the village poisoner trope. But you'll miss a lot of the office politics and personal subtext.
The pilot episode is a perfect example of the scramble. 'Well-Schooled in Murder' is a great story, but as the first introduction, it presents a Lynley and Havers who are already a functional, if bickering, team. You miss the incredible tension of 'A Great Deliverance', where they meet under horrible circumstances and truly despise each other's methods. That initial hostility makes their later loyalty so powerful.
Audiobook listener here. The narration by Donada Peters is phenomenal across the entire series. Listening in order lets you appreciate her consistency with voices over decades. The BBC radio dramatizations are a different beast, but fun after you've read the books.
