A Second Life Inside My Novels

A Second Life Inside My Novels

Her name was Cathedra. Leave her last name blank, if you will. Where normal people would read, "And they lived happily ever after," at the end of every fairy tale story, she could see something else. Three different things. Three words: Lies, lies, lies. A picture that moves. And a plea: Please tell them the truth. All her life she dedicated herself to becoming a writer and telling the world what was being shown in that moving picture. To expose the lies in the fairy tales everyone in the world has come to know. No one believed her. No one ever did. She was branded as a liar, a freak with too much imagination, and an orphan who only told tall tales to get attention. She was shunned away by society. Loveless. Friendless. As she wrote "The End" to her novels that contained all she knew about the truth inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, she also decided to end her pathetic life and be free from all the burdens she had to bear alone. Instead of dying, she found herself blessed with a second life inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, and living the life she wished she had with the characters she considered as the only friends she had in the world she left behind. Cathedra was happy until she realized that an ominous presence lurks within her stories. One that wanted to kill her to silence the only one who knew the truth.

1001 Dark Tales

1001 Dark Tales

I found an old quill in an antique shop and decided to buy it since I have always wanted to write with quills. However, as soon as I touched the quill to the paper, I was transported into the book. I wasn't the only one there, though three males who always hide their identities behind masks were in the book with me. They claim the quill belongs to them, and I must return it. Since I refuse, they follow me into every book I go into. One day, I was debating which of my mature books to write when I accidentally spilled the ink onto my book, 1001 Dark Tales. The only way they'll help me out of the book is if I give the quill back, and there is now a fourth. As I go through more of the book with them, I start noticing things. Things I had never planned for in my book, and it concerned me because even though I hadn't written those parts yet, none of the other stories I had used the quill on had ever gone that off track. However, when we tried to leave the book, it wouldn't let us back out. It seems we're stuck in the book until we finish all 1001 Dark Tales.

what to write a fantasy book about?

2 답변2025-06-10 10:22:58
Fantasy books thrive on imagination, but the best ones anchor their wildest ideas in emotional truth. I'd start by asking what fascinates me most—is it mythical creatures, intricate magic systems, or political intrigue in made-up kingdoms? Lately, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of a world where memories are currency, traded like gold. Picture a thief who steals not jewels, but someone’s happiest moments, leaving them hollow. The story could explore what happens when they accidentally take a memory that wasn’t meant to be seen—a royal secret that sparks a rebellion.

The magic system would need rules; maybe memories fade if not 'stored' properly, or certain emotions corrode the thief’s mind over time. The protagonist could grapple with the ethics of their trade, especially when they uncover a conspiracy tied to their own forgotten past. Side characters might include a memory-hoarding noble who’s literally drowning in nostalgia, or a rebel whose missing memories hold the key to overthrowing the corrupt system. The setting? A city built vertically, where the rich live atop towers literally 'above' the poor’s suffering. The higher you climb, the more pristine—and artificial—the world becomes.

how to get ideas for a fantasy novel

I find inspiration in the strangest places. Walking through a dense forest or an old city with cobblestone streets sparks my imagination. I jot down snippets of dialogue or character quirks I observe in real life and twist them into something magical. Mythology is a goldmine—Greek, Norse, or even lesser-known folklore can be adapted into fresh stories. Sometimes, I blend two unrelated ideas, like a heist plot in a floating city or a detective story with dragons. Dreams also play a big role; I keep a notebook by my bed to capture those weird, vivid fragments before they fade.

Music is another powerful tool. A single song can evoke a whole scene or character in my mind. I also love flipping through artbooks or browsing fantasy art online; a single painting can inspire an entire kingdom or a cursed artifact. The key is to stay curious and let your mind wander without judgment. Even mundane things—like a rusty key or an abandoned house—can become the seed of an epic tale if you ask 'what if?' enough times.

how to come up with a plot for a fantasy novel

Creating a plot for a fantasy novel is like weaving magic into words. I always start with the world-building because a rich setting can inspire entire storylines. For instance, imagine a floating city where people trade memories instead of gold—that alone sparks questions about power, loss, and identity. Next, I focus on the protagonist’s flaws and desires. A hero who craves immortality but is cursed to forget their past creates instant tension.

Then, I layer in conflicts: political intrigue between rival mage guilds, or a forgotten god stirring beneath the earth. Subplots like a rogue scholar deciphering ancient prophecies add depth. Themes matter too—maybe exploring sacrifice or the cost of progress. Lastly, I throw in unpredictable twists, like the villain being the hero’s future self. The key is balancing originality with familiar tropes, making the unbelievable feel real.

Which best story writing topics work well for fantasy novels?

What about the classic 'orcish horde' but from the orcs' perspective? Not as noble savages, but as a complex culture with their own values, history, and reasons for conflict with the human kingdoms. Maybe they're not invading for evil, but because their ancestral lands are dying, and the 'civilized' races won't allow migration. The protagonist is an orc diplomat or warrior, trying to secure a future for their people against an enemy that sees them as monsters. It humanizes the 'other' without making them secretly just like humans. Their morality, art, and social structures are different. It's a story about prejudice, cultural clash, and the tragedy of wars born from mutual misunderstanding and fear.

Can you suggest creative ideas for romance novels set in fantasy worlds?

Diving into the world of fantasy romance is like opening a treasure chest filled with golden possibilities. Imagine a realm where magical creatures coexist, and love blossoms amidst the chaos of a looming war. One idea that pops into my mind is a story about a forbidden romance between a human and a shapeshifter. They meet in the enchanted forest, and as he takes on different forms, they navigate their identities and cultures. The conflict can arise from an ancient prophecy that foretells doom if their love flourishes, pushing them to choose between their hearts and their worlds. This setup allows for rich character development and emotionally charged moments, plus the added tension of external forces trying to tear them apart.

Another angle to consider is a kingdom where emotions are literal currency; love can empower magic and affect the balance of power. Here, our protagonist, a thief skilled in stealing emotions, encounters a royal with the power of true love. Their paths intertwine in a delightful twist of fate as she tries to steal his heart for a reputation boost, but finds herself genuinely falling for him. This storyline can explore themes of vulnerability and redemption alongside magical heists and court intrigue. The blend of romance and adventure always gets my heart racing!

Lastly, how about a narrative focused around star-crossed lovers in a society divided into clans that wield elemental powers? These clans could hold age-old grudges, each controlling fire, water, earth, or air. The female protagonist, born to the earth clan, finds herself irresistibly drawn to a boy from the fire clan, challenging the norms of hatred and rivalry. Their journey could embody a quest to unite their clans, with the dual challenge of overcoming external enemies and the internal battle of their unexpected love. It’s dramatic yet captivating, and the rich imagery just enhances the romance! There's so much to explore within fantasy, and everything feels like a canvas for imagination. Inspiration is everywhere!

how to write a fantasy novel

Writing a fantasy novel is an adventure, much like exploring an uncharted realm where anything is possible. The key is to build a world that feels alive, with its own rules and history. Start by sketching out the basics of your setting—whether it’s a sprawling medieval kingdom, a futuristic city floating in the clouds, or a hidden village where magic is as common as rain. Think about how the world’s geography, politics, and cultures shape the lives of your characters. For inspiration, look at how 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss creates a sense of depth through its detailed magic system and lore. The way Kvothe’s story unfolds feels grounded because the world around him is so richly imagined.

Characters are the heart of any story, and in fantasy, they often carry the weight of the world’s conflicts. Don’t just focus on heroes and villains; give your side characters quirks and motivations that make them memorable. Take 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' by Scott Lynch—Locke is a brilliant thief, but it’s his camaraderie with Jean and the rest of the Gentlemen Bastards that makes the story shine. Their banter and loyalty add layers to the high-stakes heists. When crafting your protagonist, consider their flaws and how they grow. A character who starts naive but learns harsh lessons, like Fitz in 'The Farseer Trilogy', feels more real than one who’s perfect from the start.

Magic systems can make or break a fantasy novel. Decide whether magic is rare or commonplace, whether it comes at a cost or is freely wielded. Brandon Sanderson’s 'Mistborn' series is a masterclass in this—allomancy’s rules are clear, and the limitations create tension. If your world has gods or mythical creatures, think about how they interact with mortals. Are they distant figures of legend, like in 'The Priory of the Orange Tree', or deeply involved in human affairs, as in 'American Gods'? Consistency is crucial; readers will notice if the rules change without reason.

Plotting a fantasy novel often involves balancing epic stakes with personal journeys. The quest to save the world is classic, but it’s the smaller moments—like a character’s reunion with a lost sibling or the betrayal of a trusted ally—that resonate. 'The Wheel of Time' series excels at this, weaving countless threads into a tapestry where every action has consequences. Don’t rush the pacing; let the story breathe. And remember, a satisfying ending doesn’t need to tie up every loose end—sometimes, a bit of mystery lingers, as in 'The Hobbit', where Bilbo’s adventures hint at a larger world beyond the Shire.
