The treatment of the everyday citizen. Epic fantasies often focus on kings and mages, but what's life like for the farmer whose taxes pay for the royal army? For the spacer on a corporate mining rig? Showing snippets of normal life amidst the grandeur establishes scale and stakes. The hero might be fighting to save the world, but seeing what that world is to ordinary people—their hopes, their routines, their struggles—makes the threat tangible and the victory meaningful.

The feeling that the world wasn't built for the protagonist. This is a big one. In lesser books, the world feels like a theme park where all the rides exist for the hero to experience. In the best ones, the world has its own logic, history, and moving parts that operate independently of the main plot. The hero's journey is just one thread in a vast, woven tapestry. Things happen in other places. Factions have their own agendas. It makes the protagonist's struggle feel more significant because they're fighting against—or within—a real, uncaring system.

The interplay between setting and character identity. A person from a harsh, resource-scarce asteroid colony will have a fundamentally different psyche from someone raised in a lush, protected orbital garden. Great worldbuilding shapes the characters at a core level. Their beliefs, fears, skills, and prejudices are a product of their world. The setting isn't just where the story happens; it's what forged the people in it, making their actions and growth feel inevitable and true.

The evolution of technology and magic. Static worlds are less interesting. Does magic have a history? Was it stronger in the past? Are new spells being discovered? In sci-fi, is technology rapidly accelerating, or has it plateaued? Are there competing tech paradigms? A sense of progress (or regression) makes the world feel dynamic. You get the sense that even if the main story ended, the world would keep changing, inventing, and discovering, which is profoundly exciting.

The ecosystems, both biological and social. A fantasy world where the giant flying predators have no visible food source, or a sci-fi planet with a single biome and one culture, just feels cheap. Great worldbuilders think about food chains, trade routes, resource scarcity, and how geography shapes politics. How does the desert kingdom's economy function? What do the aliens on a gas giant actually eat? That interconnectedness makes the world feel robust and believable, like a real place that could actually function.

How do fantasy and science fiction books differ in worldbuilding?

I get why people compare them, but to me they're solving different puzzles. Good fantasy worldbuilding makes the impossible feel emotionally true and internally consistent. The magic doesn't have to obey our physics, but it has to obey its own established rules, and those rules should ideally reflect the story's themes. Good sci-fi worldbuilding makes the improbable feel logically inevitable. The technology should feel like a natural, if extreme, extension of known principles, and its societal impact should be thought through. A test I use: if you removed the speculative element, what's left? In a fantasy story, you'd often have a historical or pastoral drama. In a sci-fi story, you'd have a political thriller or a sociological study. The speculative element is the catalyst, but the base compounds are different.
