The clearing at the center of the West was not an open space, but a pocket of impossibly clear air held within a dome of petrified white wood. In the center sat the Amber Cathedral—a structure that looked less like a building and more like a gargantuan, calcified heart. It rose a thousand feet into the canopy, its walls translucent and glowing with a deep, internal heat that made the surrounding "Green Death" seem pale by comparison.

“Thankfully, none of that is needed. The key to repairing the bond and preventing my death is Amber.” I blinked, momentarily thrown. “Amber?” I repeated, almost convinced I’d misheard him. My tears were still wet on my cheeks, my breath still hitching from the sobs I hadn’t quite finished. “What does Amber have to do with… this?” “Yes,” he said, like it was the simplest thing in the world, but there was a flicker of unease in his voice. “Basically, true love averts tragedy.
