He leaned his head back against my shoulder, his eyes closing.
"I don't deserve you," he whispered. "I am poison. I am blood and bullets and broken glass. And you... you are the sunrise."
"Don't," I murmured, my lips brushing his temple. "Don't talk about deserving. Just let me hold you."
I reached for a soft sponge. I dipped it in the warm water and began to wash him. Slow, careful strokes, sliding the sponge over his shoulders, his chest, his arms. I washed away the blood, the grime, the evidence of the violence.
