Its leave-less branches is bent in a way that provides some kind of shade on a big hole in the ground. I squint my eyes to help clear my vision and move slowly towards the hole and that's when I see it too. ********************************

Autumn had arrived at Crestwood State University, casting a beautiful, warm glow over the campus. The familiar back-to-school jitters mingled with the rich scent of fall foliage. Freshman year was in full swing for Jane and Mike, a new chapter of their lives opening before them, promising endless possibilities.

Dorin stood by the doorway with nothing better to do. He looked around and noticed a window at the end of the hall. He walked to the window and stared outside. The leaves in the trees are starting to change color. Back in Monarch forest, the trees start to change color in October. Isn’t it still August? “Well, it will be September next week,” thought Dorin, “but still, there’s a whole month of difference in the two places.” He stretched out his hand to reach a sunbeam. It was starting to get a bit chilly. Or perhaps it never really gets warm here?

Grace noticed how everything appeared more defined. Edges were clearer. Colors deeper. Even sounds carried differently. She welcomed it. There was something grounding about a season that did not pretend to be gentle.

October arrived like a slow exhale. The property settled into its autumn rhythm — leaves turning on the oak tree from green to amber to deep, burning red, the garden releasing its last abundance before the cold came, the retreat center wrapping itself in wool blankets and woodsmoke and the particular kind of interiority that shorter days invited.
