he explains just as we reach the den's opening. Sadness sweeps over my heart as I realize what the human rulers have done. They have successfully driven a wedge between humans and their protectors. I never even thought about it. I considered them to be beasts. I felt like that up until his explanation. I didn't even really feel appreciative toward them while living in the city. They live and die for us...And we call them Beasts. Tears sting my eyes and make it to where I can't see. I stop walking so I won't fall, and the tears begin to fall instead.

“Then you’re here for a reason. State it.” The man’s eyes moved across the clearing, taking in the warriors, the defensive formation, the tension. Then they stopped on Elara. And did not move. Her breath caught. The way he looked at her wasn’t like the rogues. It wasn’t like Darius. It wasn’t even like Kael. It was recognition. Realization. “Well,” he said softly. “That explains the scent.” Kael shifted slightly, placing himself more fully between them. “You’re not speaking to her,” he said. The man’s attention returned to Kael, and for the first time, there was the faintest hint of amusement in his expression. “You must be the Beast Alpha.” “I am.” “I’ve heard about you.”

His claws trembled at my throat, caught between killing and clinging. And then, with a sound like glass shattering, Zara’s last thread anchored into his spine. Her body went limp, crumpling into the mud, but it was enough. Maxim reeled back, the Beast howling in defiance. His roar wasn’t human. It wasn’t Hollow. It was something in between, split down the center, fractured but still holding. But when his gaze caught mine again, I knew which side still lived. The Beast didn’t know my name—but Maxim did.

But Beast was standing in a relaxed posture doing his work. Similarly, he also separated the fingers from his other hand. Now it was the turn of his feet.
