Grief clung to him like a shadow, the pain in his eyes so raw it almost made me pity him.
"I've already admitted my mistakes," he said hoarsely. "Can't you give me one last chance to make things right?"
I gave a short, bitter laugh and pointed at the fluttering paper outside.
"My heart is like those scraps—once it's shattered, you can't piece it back together. Even if you tried, the cracks would still remain. No matter what you do, it'll never be whole again."
