Her voice was small and barely a whisper – the temptation to close her eyes and start her slumber was like a siren’s call for her. Upon her command, a flock of black butterflies immerged from the darkness of her room. They heed their master’s command and from the accumulated shadow within the flock, a floating egg was seen. It was placed under their master’s arms as if she was curling around it – protecting it. With the command being delivered, the flock of Slaughter butterflies entered Cent’s shadow, waiting to be called again – the taste of angel flesh still lingering their predatory instincts.

It took a moment for the sun to shine through the canopy of butterflies, casting a kaleidoscope of dazzling colors into the air. The delicate creatures fluttered their wings in unison, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and movement. Each wing was adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant hues. As they took flight, the colors mixed and merged, creating a beautiful symphony for the eyes to behold. It was like witnessing a burst of confetti, but more magical. When I stand from replacing the book on his shelf, I notice a shadow box with Tyler’s art work inside. It’s a butterfly he made at preschool. Well, we made it together. The staff was to trace around each child’s hand two times, cut out the handprints, color them, then glue them together. Tyler insisted we trace both his hands and mine. His smaller hands form the top two wings, and my larger hands are the bottom wings. He decorated the butterfly with glitter, colors, and pipe cleaners. The fact that it hangs in his bedroom inside a protective box means Calvin thinks it’s as special as Tyler does.

She set her board on the easel, her tiny hands smoothing it as she turned to the microphone. “Hello!” she chirped, her voice clear but small at first. “Um… my project is called The Butterfly Garden.” She pointed at the colourful paper flowers covering the board, each one decorated with glitter glue. Above them, paper butterflies were pinned on little folded tabs, so they looked like they were flying. “My mommy helped me make the flowers and the sparkles.” Avery tapped the glitter with her fingertip proudly. “And my daddy helped me make the butterflies move.” She tugged a paper tab and one butterfly flapped its wings. A few parents chuckled and clapped.

But she had stupidly missed, and this was her f*cking punishment. Gritting her teeth, she watched as he opened up the box, taking a weird looking thing from inside. It was in the shape of a butterfly; pink in color, and there was this part that protruded from it in an odd and unappealing way. What was it for? What was he going to do with i~ “Don’t move.” He moved closer to her, hands sinking between her thighs as he probed the pink object against her entrance. “I’m going to put it in, brace yourself.”

Raina There is a thing about butterflies, they use the colors on their wings to attract potential mates. Isn't it wonderful that I do the same? But the only difference between me and butterfly is that my attraction lands me in trouble. I stared into my reflection in the mirror, to others I look like a beautiful butterfly with my long straight brown hair cascading down to my hips, my leaf-like hazel green eyes, and my pink-dewy skin tone. I look colorful but my life is shadowed by darkness.

“We’d be able to tell if you were. You don’t smell like a dragon.” I don’t know why, but his words relive me. The thought of turning into a large fire breathing lizard scares the crap out of me. Actually, the thought of turning into any kind of animal scares the crap out of me. “I don’t want people to think I’m a slut,” I murmur. “What can I do? Am I supposed to… choose one of them?” My heart hurts as I speak the words. “No.” Margot shakes her head and smiles gently. “Fate gave you four mates for a reason. We have no way of know that reason right now, but it’s important you stay with all four guys.”

There was a beautiful blue butterfly on the porch railing. I wanted to capture it and put it in a glass jar, even though I shouldn't. Daddy always told me that rubbing the powder off a butterfly's wings made it impossible for them to fly. I didn't want to hurt the thing; I just wanted to look at it a little longer. And as soon as I walked up the porch, it would fly off, and I would never see it again. The butterfly flew away, as predicted, and I had only made it up the first step.

Grief stricken that I have to go. Braxton puts his arm around me and holds me close, his face in my hair. He holds me like that for a long moment, breathing me in as I inhale the scents of the garden around us. A butterfly whispers by on a breeze, it’s blue and black wings catching the sunlight and giving it a twinkle. A few more in various sizes and colors follow. To be that free, like the butterflies or the birds, to take off and fly wherever I want… any time I want… wouldn’t that be heavenly?
