The moon hung low, bloated and red, casting skeletal shadows across the courtyard ruins behind the Velvet Coil. Cracked stone pillars, crawling with ivy and age, surrounded me. I should have gone to bed, but sleep would not come. A footstep behind me made me turn, already knowing who it would be. Caelan stood in the archway, arms crossed, shirt half-unbuttoned, his jaw clenched like he’d been biting back a thousand things.
