"That is not a legitimate reason!" I can't believe this! I'm Keller effing Madsen! She can't deny me! I'm too hot for that! There had to be a valid reason, much more reasonable than an A class jerkface- not that I would deny it because it's true, but this? I won't accept this as an answer. I refuse to be denied for a petty excuse of a reason.

“I do not currently possess evidence of such a connection.” “That is because someone took it from you,” I replied quickly, refusing to let the moment slip away. “It is not because it never existed.” “That is a possibility,” he said, and the fact that he even acknowledged that made something in me lift slightly, because a possibility meant doubt, and doubt meant he was not completely gone. Wilson exhaled loudly behind me and said, “I would like to formally acknowledge that we have progressed from denial to possibility, and that feels like a significant emotional milestone for all of us.”

Two weeks passed like a blur, anxiety crippled Pamala. There were no other letters or threat. Whoever it was must have been bluffing, it was a silly trick. She didn't dwell too much on it. She was anxious about stepping outside, now the news of her Rejection had spread like wildfire she didn't want to people people throwing her looks of mockery or pity anywhere she went to, so she didn't go out at all. But it would be good to find a job and support her parents now that her hope for a mate was crushed. It was hard living, she felt like a shell. It hadn't gotten better but she was learning to cope with the pain.

Cas called out and Dennis raised his head swiftly to meet the face. "My man." He saluted Cas. "What are you trying to avoid? He grabbed a glass and a bottle of scotch. "Nothing, I just need to breathe." Dennis replied, downing another shot. "I don’t think that’s a bottle of air you have there, enough with the alcohol bro, we have a flight to catch early in the morning." He paused. "I think I'm familiar with this drinking pattern." Cas smiled up at Dennis. "You like her." "What? No!" Dennis tried to deny it.

“You’re acting like he’s moving to another country.” I ignored him. Jayden walked toward the door and paused for a second. “We are going to still see each other at the cafeteria later right?” he asked. I raised an eyebrow. “With you and your husbands?” He groaned. “They are not my husbands.” “Sure.” River smirked. “Denial is the first stage.” Jayden pointed at him. “You’re not helping.” Then he looked back at me. “So… cafeteria?” I pretended to think about it. Then shrugged.

He said sharply. “Denial.” The chesnut haired girl sang teasingly. “Also a river in Egypt or something.” “Sounds like the cliché response when someone is in-” “Don’t you dare say-“ “Deeeniaaal.” “If anyone is in denial it’s you.” He hissed. “Whatever you say, Mr. Grouchy.” Caitlynn shrugged nonchalantly, smiling cutely at him. “Gawd, do to you ever get tired of being this annoying?”

LYRA The Devourer learns quickly what refusal feels like. Not denial— refusal. Denial is passive. A door left closed. Refusal is active. A hand on the frame. A voice saying no with intent behind it. The first time it tests memory, it’s almost polite. A pressure brushes the back of my thoughts, not pulling, not forcing. Just… requesting. An offer shaped like curiosity. A moment surfaces unbidden: my mother’s voice, low and steady, humming while she worked. A memory so old it still smells like smoke and warm earth.

Cassian replied calmly, unhurriedly. “I only need to show you what you refused to look at.” He reached into the inside pocket of his coat and pulled out his phone. “I didn’t want to do this,” he said, though there was no regret in his tone. “But denial is a luxury you can’t afford anymore.” He unlocked the screen and stepped closer, holding it out so I couldn’t avoid seeing it. Messages. Emails. Thread after thread of conversations that made my throat close as I scrolled through them with shaky fingers.

“Did someone say just in case? Because I would like to officially vote for denial.” Why did Rain always choose these moments to get involved? I didn’t mind Rain getting involved because he was aopart of our pack but right now I was very tense, wondering what the hell was happening with all of this. It was so hard to wrap my mind around it. Colby didn’t even look back. “Denial gets us dead.” Rain took a slow bite of his cookie. “Denial gets us temporary peace and cookies.” “Rain,” I said, rubbing my arms. “I’m serious. Something’s off.”
