I could feel the tears. Then someone shouted, "It’s her!" I looked up. A middle-aged woman with blonde hair and gray eyes—Dexter’s mom—was pointing at me. "It’s her! That cursed omega! She led those wolves to us!" All eyes turned to me. She marched forward. “ She told Dexter there would be an attack!" Mom stepped in front of me. "What are you talking about?" "Your daughter cursed my son! It’s her fault he’s hurt! She’s cursed! She’ll kill us all!"

“She’s mine, and you’ll never take her from me.” Marissa laughs, a cold, sharp sound that cuts through the air. “Don’t make me laugh, Katya. You’re nothing. Just a placeholder for what should’ve been. A failure.” Her words pierce me, but I don’t falter. “You’re wrong,” I say quietly, meeting her gaze. “And you’ll never hurt her. Not while I’m breathing.” Marissa’s face twists with rage, and she takes a step closer. “Then maybe I’ll just stop your breathing.”

We were stuck there for seconds, staring at each other, both of us, dumbfounded and lost of words. "Hello, Layla" he greeted. He remembered my name, and again, I blushed at the way he called out my name. It sounded so demure and sweetening to my ears. I could feel a strong connection between the both of us. It felt as though there was just more to what was happening between us. I could hear whispers inside of me, a being within me whispering the words, "Mate!" I shook my head in denial. Zarah is whimpering in my head. I push off the wall, needing to get back to my room and pack my things to leave. I can’t stay here, I just can’t. I’m the laughingstock of the Kingdom. Poor little Marissa, who’s mate cheated on her, and she is now rejected once again. I warned him and there was no going back if he did this.

My wolf said. As seconds pass, the heat, the fire, the bones shifting. Muscles pulling tight. I cringed, hand clutching my chest. She’s coming… My vision blurred. A low snarl echoed in my mind. “You should calm down, Silver. I am trying to connect with the spirit.” And from across the square, Elder Mira turned to me, her blind eyes suddenly glowing. She walked toward me, moving faster than her cane should allow. She touched my cheek. “Silver Colt. The Cursed child born under the Blood Moon eighteen years ago.”
