Danny studies my face carefully before continuing. “Everybody’s been lying to you. Me. Clinton. The school. All of us.” I stare at him. There’s something strange in his expression tonight. Usually, Danny carries himself with this arrogant confidence that makes you want to punch him sometimes. Tonight, he just looks tense. Almost desperate. “We’re not who we told you we are.” I raise an eyebrow. “What does that even mean?” He hesitates. Then finally— “We’re werewolves.” The silence afterward lasts two seconds before laughter bursts out of me.

I cut in, my voice steadier than I felt, “what do you want?” He hesitated. That hesitation told me everything. “I heard things,” he said finally. My stomach dropped. “What things?” He looked uncomfortable now. “About Frank.” Of course. “What about him?” I asked. Danny’s gaze sharpened. “Is he playing you?” I stared at him, disbelief rushing in hot and fast. “Excuse me?” “He’s got a reputation,” Danny said, frustration creeping into his voice. “You know that. He doesn’t do anything serious. He doesn’t stick around.”

Xavier said, "and that a man with eleven years in a federal prison and two children he trusted with different information would design the system so neither piece was complete without the other." Danny was quiet for a moment. The toast popped. He ignored it. "You've thought about this a lot," he said, looking at Scarlett. He picked up his toast. "Do you always—" he started, then stopped. "Always what," Scarlett said. "Nothing." "Danny." "I said nothing." He took a bite. Looked at Xavier with Raymond's eyes doing the reading thing — the same rapid comprehensive assessment she recognized because she'd been watching its adult version for weeks. "So you're the one who's been helping her."

He said, “Y-Yes. It was a thank-you gift, and that’s all.” Drake looked him straight in the eye and said, “Dillon.” They grew up together, so they were too familiar with each other. “Say it, Beta. He just started dodging Alex's obvious punches and kicks. This went on for a while and the remaining pack members left what they were doing and they started cheering them on. Damien suddenly used his left leg to fall Alex down. Alex smiled, he was really enjoying it. Damien was so smiling now too. He started moving closer to him and before he went to stand over him, he gave him a big kick at his lower back and Alex shouted in excitement. “YOU HAVE TO LET ME GO, YOU TRUNK OF A MAN!” A low, sinister chuckle leaves his lips at my lame insult, his wide shoulders shaking slowly at the motion. “My name is Santino Ricca.”

Arawn gets a crystal glass formed into a skull, and Danny’s eyes sparkle even more as he thanks him for it. After all we have eaten, I’m impressed by the fact that sitting at the table with food piled on it doesn’t make me sick to my stomach. Danny and Arwan seem to enjoy it as well as they dig in happily, and I’m glad everything turned out as I had planned. Or even better. “This was the best Christmas ever!” Danny gushes as he stands in the door, smiling brightly. He looks so cute while holding his gym bag to his chest, where he has put his gifts in.

Though it did mean she was getting better at hiding her thoughts, and while I was proud of her for that, I wasn’t too happy that she was perfecting the skill on me. I was sitting at a table talking to Xander when I saw Danny, one of the prime minister’s sons, approach Jillie. She had been standing talking to Alyx and Mina. Growing up, Danny had always been the biggest flirt I knew, even more significant than Xander, and that was saying something. When Zane clears his throat, the men seem to snap out of their reverie as they move to the stage, climbing and introducing themselves. He has this authority that could make any sub tell their secret in less than a minute. He couldn't be past forty, with a long clean beard, and beady eyes. Not the handsome of the group, but charming of course. "What are you looking at?" Zane's voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "Nothing?" I say trying to hide the blush I am feeling.
