he uttered, his voice tinged with sadness. I halted my steps, fighting the urge to look back. Taking a deep breath, and summoning all my courage, I resumed walking, resisting the pull to glance back, leaving him in the darkness.

I've already tried to find this place that holds so many secrets, and just another one of my horror dreams. "And dad, if you're hiding something from me, I'll find out with your help or not! There is something in this city that scares the remaining people and I will know whether or not my name is Delmom Salvatore.

"And if I don’t want to?" Dean’s smile widened, slow and predatory, the gleam in his eyes a mixture of triumph and malice. “Then the darkness will claim you anyway. You’ve felt it all your life, haven’t you? The whispers in the shadows? The pull you never understood?” He took a deliberate step forward, his voice dripping with eerie certainty. “You think this is something new, Henry? That you had a choice in this?” His voice dropped to a whisper, a blade wrapped in silk, slicing through the last remnants of denial. “This isn’t something you can run from. This is who you’ve always been.”

The black-robed figure laughed softly. "Of course you know me. I am the part of life that you forgot. I am the truth they tried to hide from you." Suddenly, the room shook violently again. From outside, there was a loud bang followed by a heartbreaking scream that echoed throughout the building. Something-or someone-was charging in, bringing even greater horror than before. The shattered door was now wide open, revealing a hallway filled with a dark mist that crawled across the floor like a living creature. In that mist, shadows flashed rapidly, creating whispers that sliced through the air.

Without looking back, I vanished into the snow. Andrew stood in the snow, staring in the direction I had gone. His hoarse voice drifted through the wind. "You won't abandon me, Eleanor." A month later, at a bar in Glaciercrest Pack, I sat by the window, sipping coffee as I admired the snowy landscape outside. The murmurs of travelers around me reached my ears. "Did you hear? Darkmoon Pack’s strongest warrior confessed to murdering his ex-father-in-law and was sentenced today." My fingers froze around my coffee cup.

Slater quickly shushed her by pointing his gun in her direction. It wasn’t the recommended strategy, but it worked. “Shut up!” The girl whimpered, cowering back in the cell into the woman behind her. Matthew continued his scan. The fourth girl stood against the wall, her head back against the bricks as her lips moved quickly. He could hear her faintly, and it took a second before he made out the prayer for mercy she was chanting with her eyes closed. Mercy. “Macy Swan?” He asked, knowing from the picture he had studied that this was her, though they had done a hell of a job trying to hide her. Her black hair had been bleached blonde, and make-up was smeared across her face.

Chapter 46: A cry in the darkness The darkness isn't complete silence. It's alive—breathing, watching, waiting. Truth's cry pierces through the blackness, a high-pitched wail that sends electricity down my spine. My hand instinctively reaches for her, fingers searching for the familiar softness of her blanket. Marcus's grip on my hand remains—a lifeline in this sudden, suffocating darkness. "Don't move," he whispers, so low I can barely hear him over Truth's escalating cries.

The stress and deception eat away at him, leaving him increasingly isolated emotionally. By the end of the chapter, Abby sits alone in the break room, staring at a faded photograph of his family. Memories of childhood laughter and shared struggles flash through his mind. He realizes the duality of his life—hard work, respect, and status by day; deceit, secrecy, and guilt by night. A quiet voice in his mind asks whether he can ever reconcile the two, or if one will inevitably destroy the other.
