Take a sip of wine. The candles flicker again, harder this time, all of them at once, and the temperature in the room drops so fast I see my breath. The lights go out. Not just the candles. Everything. The kitchen light, the bathroom light, the glow of my phone, all of it dies at once and the darkness is absolute, total, the kind of dark that has weight and texture and presence.

Total. The kind of darkness that existed before the world was formed, before light was separated from void, before the first star ignited in the emptiness of space. Then... One crimson rune slowly began to glow. It was not large, this rune, no bigger than a human hand, but its light seemed to push against the darkness with terrible insistence, carving out a sphere of visibility in the sea of blackness. Its dim light revealed a figure standing beyond the ancient glass wall. A wolf cloaked entirely in black.

And then— Darkness.

And then… Darkness.

The unmistakable glow of gold in the darkness. The Dark Ones had arrived.
