We didn't let the darkness win. END OF VOLUME ONE

Art swallowed thickly, took a deep breath, and then stepped forward. The darkness was disorienting for someone who wasn't used to going through it, like Nikolai, but for art, it was like riding a bike. Once you've done it enough times, you never forget. He felt the darkness wrapping around him, almost like a thin veil sliding across his skin and extending as he stepped through to the other side, holding onto them for a brief moment before snapping back as it let go, allowing them to step into the light on the other side.

The Darkness called out from its blockade beyond the hills where I sat south. I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms. The Darkness's voice echoed a constant, insidious whisper in my mind. It promised relief, an end to the torment. But I knew better. I had seen the horrors it could unleash, the twisted, broken souls it left in its wake. I had to ignore the Darkness for another twelve hours before the ritual was over as that was how long the first one was, and the Darkness had lost. I had to do this for my twins and to ruin some version of the Cult's plan to kill them and change the realm.
