The line disconnected and silence returned. I stared out the window in thought, the rumors, the threats, the surveillance, the attack, the hidden compartment behind my mother’s portrait, and the key. Everything felt connected somehow but I couldn’t see how.
“You should stay with me tonight.” Matthew’s voice broke through my thoughts.
