I stared out the window, tracing the bare branches of trees, imagining them as the white veins inside me, fragile but still reaching, still holding life.
When we got there, the waiting room felt bigger than usual. Too many chairs. Too many people. The hum of voices, footsteps, and the occasional squeak of a rolling cart pressed against the edges of my chest. I tried not to let it reach inside me. I picked up a magazine but didn’t open it.
Ethan was already there when we arrived. He stood by the window, hands shoved in his pockets, staring at nothing in particular. I felt my stomach twist.
“You look… okay,” he said, finally.
