I walk in alone.
The overhead lights are off. A single hanging bulb swings over a metal chair in the center.
My mother is tied to it, her wrists bound, duct tape over her mouth, eyes wide and wet but furious. A bruise blooms on her cheek. She’s alive. Unharmed beyond that.
Theo stands behind her, swaying.
He looks like a ghost of the man I once loved, gaunt, unshaven, clothes hanging off him, eyes bloodshot and wild. A hunting knife glints in his trembling hand.
