A few people nodded. I wondered if they could hear the irony bleeding through my tone.
“We are told to flee from it. Not fight it. Not reason with it. Flee.”
My eyes flickered to him again.
He leaned back casually, one leg crossed over the other, eyes half-lidded as if he were listening to music instead of scripture.
I gripped the edges of the lectern. “But too often,” I continued, “we tell ourselves we are stronger than temptation. We tell ourselves we can endure it, stand near it, even taste it, and not be changed.”
