Nearly thirty minutes passed without a clear destination. Finally, he stopped at a 24-hour fast-food restaurant on the roadside. The place was nearly empty. Zaya followed him in as he carried her suitcase. “What do you want to order, darling?” Arash asked the cashier. Zaya turned sharply toward him. “Chicken and rice.” “Rice?” Arash raised a brow. “I meann … fries and a burger,” she corrected. After ordering two of the same meals, Arash leaned in and whispered. “After this, you’re free to go, darling. But … you have to answer my question first.”

Speed never lied. At three hundred miles an hour, the world peeled away everything unnecessary. There was no room for pretense or sweet-talking, no time for betrayal or half-truths. Excuses had no traction at these speeds; the machine demanded everything, and if you hesitated, it would chew you up and spit you out as just another cautionary tale whispered in the garages of the elite.

I'd decided enough time had been wasted so I headed for the food court. The choices were astounding; there were six different Asian takeaway shops that all seemed to sell the same dishes of western Chinese food. None of that interested me. Then I spotted an old favourite: Hungry Jack's. The food was bad for you, and I knew it, but this was always my preferred fast food joint when I indulged myself. I waited patiently in line and ordered my meal. As I stood waiting to collect my order, I felt a tap on my shoulder and realized someone had been calling my name.
