Donovan didn’t let them finish. He was a blur of motion. He caught the first one’s arm, twisted, and drove his knife up under the ribcage. The man crumpled with a choked gasp. Finn engaged the second, a short, brutal exchange of blows that ended with Finn slamming the wolf’s head against the stone wall. He went down and didn’t move.
“Keep moving!” Donovan urged, barely glancing at the fallen men.
My training kicked in, a cold, detached part of my mind taking over. I scanned shadows, listened for footsteps, kept my body between Dorothy and any open space. This wasn’t practice. This was the real, raw, ugly thing. The smell of blood was coppery and thick.
