Samantha leaned closer, practically hovering, her excitement making me smile despite myself.
She picked up the sealed bag, turning it over in her hands before noticing a small note attached. She unfolded it and read aloud, her voice teasing and a little dramatic: “Sorry for overworking you last night. I got some pills and food for you. Signed, D.”
I froze, my heart stuttering in my chest. The blush that had been creeping up my neck surged hot across my cheeks, and I snatched the note from her hands, feeling my fingers tremble just slightly. My pulse raced, a strange, thrilling mix of surprise, delight, and something I couldn’t quite name.
